JOURNAL, LOGAN, UTAH, JULY 20 1399. Y in the declaration that the s situation is well at hand and that the insurrection can be speedly ended without a greatly increased force. We think the tenacity of the Filipino purposes has been underestimated and that the statements are unfounded that volunteers are willing to engage in further service. The censorship has compelled to us participate in this misrspre sentation by exercising or altering uncontroverted statements of facts on the plea, as General Otis stated, that they would alarm the people at home, orJhave the people of the United States by'the ears. ' Specifications: Prohibition of hospital reports; suppression of full reports of field operations in the event of failure, numbers of heat prostrations in the field; systematic minimizations of naval operations, and suppression of complete reports of the situation, Otis promised that hereafter the censorship should not be so severe. It is Baid to have created quite a commotion in official circles, particularly in the War department. Otiss , KILLED AFTER ALL, Hon. W. J. Bryan will visit Utah about the twenty-fift- h of next month. His stay will be brief, and he announces that if he makes a speech he would like the personnel of the committee on arrangements to include Silver Republicans and Populists; in fact, all friends of silver. He has not forgotten those who voted for him iii The press dispatches a few days ago brought news of the execution of William Going in the Indian Territory. There is quite a story back of this execution. About two years ago, Going, who was a Choctaw Indian, killed his uncle during a drunken carouse in which it is said the killing was done in self defense. He was tried according to the tribal laws, and sentenced to death. During the time intervening between his sentence and the date set for his execution, he was allowed full freedom, as in accordance with his tribal traditions and code of honor, it was known that he would be on hand at the date set. In the meantime he was playing with a professional baseball team, and his fine playing, together with the tragic fate which was hanging over him, attracted 1896. Pennsylvania and one or two other States will charter special trains to meet their volunteers at San Francisco and take them home. Governor Welh proposes to do the same thing for the Utah volunteers, and the citizens of Utah will pronounces it good. It will insure them all coming home together to receive the royal welcome awaiting them, and besides, will save each one his fare, which in the aggregate will amount to a large sum. Salt Lake will do itself proud in the great State reception, and when the boys disperse and reach their homes in the various counties, another grand welcome will await them. For several days they will be the the whole thing wide attention. OTISS STORIES TAL8E. It has long been known that General Otis has not been telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but this truth regarding the campaign in the Philippines, and that the press censors have not allowed the war correspondents to tell it. The official reports have magnified every victory and suppressed every defeat, besides falsely informing the people that the enemy was disbanding, losing force and becoming demoralized. The staff correspondents of the great newspapers and news syndicates of the United States finally made, on July 11th, a formal protest in the following terms: The undeiiigne'd, being, all staff - correspondents of American news papers stationed in Manilla, unite in the following statement: We believe that from official die patches made public in Washington, the peoplo of the United States have not received a correct impres sion of the situation in the Philippines, hut that these dispatches have presented an ultra nptimistio view that is not shared by the .general officers in the field. We that the dispatches incorrectly represent the existing conditions among the Philippines in respec to dissension and demoralization rasulting from the American campaign and to the brigand character Tabernacle Services. The services were opened by the rendition of the hymn The Spirit of God like a fire is burning, and Bishop B. M. Lewis offered prayer. Eider Wm. Hansen of the Fourth ward, who recently returned from mission to Sweden, was the first speaker, and he gave a report of his labors in the Stockholm conference. His labors he said were enjoyable and profitable. The Scandinavian Mission he reported as being in a most flourishing condition. The speaker bore an earnest testimony of the truth of the gospel in closing his remarks. Elder A. M. Merrill followed with remarks upon the necessity of listening to the constant warnings of the priesthood, and of the continual exercise of faith in God. Persecution, and opposition always knit communities closer together, and God finds it necessary to chasten us often because envy, jealousyand selfishness, cause ns to drift apart from one another, and woridlineas takes the place of devotion to God. The speaker read copiously from the New Testament, and made brief comments upon the passages referring to taming that unruly member of the body, the tongue. Speak no ill of any one, but learn to be forbearing, forgiving and just. Elder C. H. Hart was the next speaker. He commented upon the great work done by missionaries, and the cariosity with which such a system is viewed by the world at large. Not all the credit for the great work done by the elders abroad, Bhould be given to the missionary, In many instances quite as much credit is due the wife or relatives left behind. They seldom receive it, however. Mans - mediately after his reprieve rolled a cigarette as nonchalently as he would at the close of a game of ball. Several times this strange scene but finally, has been notwithstanding the fact that writ of habeas corpus had been served upon the officials of the Third district, Choctaw nation, they seemed determined to c&rrr out the decree of their own court and as their victim arrivec promptly on time, as usual, he wai shot.
