Gordon, TUESDAY Editor. columns one sentence wherein we ! 1909 MARCH, H AB TO BLAOXMAILIHG. Readers of the Nation are to be congratulated upon the fact that a criticism of its methods by The Journal has stirred that sheet np to the point of production of an original editorial. That editorial is devoted tQ an attempt to prove that the Nation has not resorted to blackmailing methods to increase itsadvertising patronage, and that TheiJournal has, AaPusual, the Nation misses it in every instance. As to our claim that the Co-o- p Machine Co. was attacked Wagon because it was not advertising, we reiterate the charge, and say that it was only attacked because the parent branch refused to entertain j , the Nations advertising it was not, why w proposi-tion.I- was f it The puerile excuse that it is not a home institution is too thin; as in that respect it differs not one whit from the others. Besides; is it not the province of a borne newspaper to invite, rather than repel, the investment of attacked? t I. I . J ' - i capital and establishment of business houses in the community? The Nation claims to have but epoken the truth regarding Miss Moenchs entertainment, and adds: Whatever appeared in these columns aside from that was paid for at the usual rates. The facts are that while in one issue the Nation denounced the performance as un interesting and of a class of which the public was tired, in the next issue, in the same the local col- -- Ji 'i i umns, it was eulogized without any mark to indicate that "what was said i - i r was paid for. An advertisement of it appeared elsewhere in the same issue. Neither does it discredit Miss Moenchs intelligence to state that she lived in Logan for several months and never heard of the existence of our contemporary. 'There are others; many of them. We referred to the changed attitude of the Nation toward the opera house management, before and after taking advertising. Our contemporary claiins that it . was during the Rosenbaum regime the trouble occurred, and says that it should not be held responsible. When we have claimed that the Nation of today is not thw Nation of the past, that paper has become indignant; and if - any person or paper denied its continuity from the days of its founding, there would be trouble. The fact is V ' that the sheet has continuously followed the same policy in this regard. It has been its fetich, and at the same time its hoodo. It has been consistent in this one policy alone blackmail The Nation then turns its searchlight and murky have attacked in any manner their private business. A mans actions in an official capacity, or his public utterances are, we claim, legiti mate objects of public comment. It refers to our alleged attacks upom H. A. Pedersen and J. A. Hendrickson. ; We have never at tacked the private business of either gentleman, and have never said anything regarding their pub lie actions more than we were able : to prove. , As to ridiculing Justice Knowles, and - George -- Cole, wo -- againdefy the Nation to(quote a single sentence directed 'againsrtheiPhusi ness invests. , As to Attorney George Q. Rich, , refer readers of both papers to the gentleman himself. Regarding Mr. J. W. Barrett, he has been mentioned in no way except in a case in which he was defendant. We regret reference to the case, but these matters have been resurrected by the Nation. When the Nation eays that The Journal has sold its body and soul to McCuue for filthy lucre aud has done all in its power to injure the senatorial chances of other prominent Democrats, it lies wilfully, maliciously and deliberately, and it is only its impecuniosity which protects it from a suit for libel, ai it has in many other instances. We ask the Nation to quote what we have said against other Democratic senatorial candidates, to- - show wherein we have attacked them. We pass as ridiculous other statements of the Nation, with this exception; that it can prove the accuracy of its statements by extracts from the columns of The Journal. We dare it to the proof.-Another thing: The Journal, notwithstanding all the changes in its editorial management, has maintained consistently the principles of its party, and is willing to meet today any and all of its former editorial utterances. As to the claim of the Nation that it is the leading ;paper of Cache county, and is supplying a great deal more and better readwe re- flector upon The Journal, with a view to convicting it of the same kind" of practice, upon the small boy principle of youre another; but this paper can repeat with the small boy, never touched me.jr3 I In' the first place the Nation charges that The Journal claims to be a whited sepulchre; to which charge - we enter an xsaka no f , Card of Thanks.
