Show Wednesday, July 9, 2003 Vernal Express B5 Scouts learn outdoor shills at Day Camp for 11 year-olds -- Teamwork, outdoor survival skills and baking a turkey in a cardboard box were among the many things d Qoy taught the 144 Scouts and their leaders at the June 28 Day Camp at Iron Springs. Vernal's Troop 776 conducted the opening flag ceremonies for the eleven-year-ol- day. Introductory troop cheers followed, with basic camp instructions and scheduling. Alternative cooking methods used by campers was a special session teaching how to turn a cardboard box into an oven with heat generated by charcoal briquettes. Leader David Rust completely covered inside and outside of the box with tin foil, cut a window in the foiled box and inserted plastic from baking bags as the glass, and set it over a grill elevated above the seasoned charcoal. Scouts enjoyed frozen biscuit pizza and pigs in a blanket from the box oven. Stew cooked in a tin can over briquettes was also sampled. Rust also explained how to bake a turkey in the foiled box oven. A spirited pancake baking contest was conducted after lunch which required each troop team to set and l, start a cookfire in a metal mix the pancake batter in a plastic bag, cook it until it was passed off by a judge, and it was eaten and deemed good by a scoutmaster. Blistered fingers and burned panearned by cakes were extras some scouts. Activities for the boys were geared toward passing off various Scout for their requirements advancements. Teamwork was a brain teaser for boys who were given one rubber band, a handful of thin cords, and were directed to move a can of pop off of its position sitting on a rock in the center of circle, across the open area and sit it down outside of the circle. They could not go within the circle outlined, nor touch the rock or can. The point of the exercise was to work together totally, and with enough equal strength as to not break the one rubber band or get inside the circle. Most troops were able to figure it out with a few d suggestions by leaders Clark Baker and Laris Hunting. half-barre- well-guide- Sponsored by the four local stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, the day camp included boys from Dutch John, Jensen, Vernal and Naples areas. for the large gathering of Scouts were Pam Davis, Paris Anderton, Lisa Henderson and Addie Snow, the four Primary presidents of the stakes involved. Co-chai- rs -- Independence bash helps Jensen Park The Jensen Park Committee held an Independence Day celebration July 3 in the Jensen Park under the supervision of Mona Allen. Allen said the celebration was planned for July 3 so as not to interfere with the annual traditions in the sur- rounding area. The festivities not only gave local midents a chance to get together to enjoy jjood food, games and companionship, it also raised needed funds for maintenance of the park. Tickets were sold for 50 cents each for games, food and activities. In addition, over 30 individuals and businesses donated items that were auctioned during the gathering. Allen said there is a three year plan for use of the money raised. The games were imaginative and fun for all who participated. Tiny toes pulled marbles from watery pools while brave souls tried to climb a greased pole to reach the $20 attached to the top of the pole. Squeals of laughter accompanied the wheelbarrow races as the courageous passengers sitting in the wheelbarrows gave directions to their blindfolded partners who were pushing the carts. The food, which was served starting at 5:30 p.m., consisted of traditional picnic fare including the standard burgers and hotdogs plus many other July 4 yummies.
