USOMATA students competed in guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass and piano divisions and ranged in age from six years to adult. Each student performed one selection from a required list and one selection of their choice. Contestants under the age of 19 were required to memorize both selections. Judges for the festival were Brent Taylor and Travis Richens from Salt Lake City; Merictta Oviatt from Las Vegas, Nev.; Wendy Long, Angela Cunningham and Amanda Semideni of Vernal. Students were judged on memorization, presentation, accuracy, technique and musicianship. were students Twenty-nin- e awarded superior ratings during the festival. Those students who received the superior rating were, violinists Elisabeth Jones, Shirsten Hamblin, Emily Peterson, Jessica Sorensen, Marquita Slaugh, Paul Wackowski, Sam Austin, Kaitlyn Chelsea Hackford, Huffman, Trystan Oldham, Chris Wilson and Presley Beynon. Superior violists were Brianna Thomas, Megan Bart Parslow, Katie McKee, Austin, Aimee LeFevre, Jacinda Parslow and Andrew Stringham. Superior bassists were T.J. Batty, Joel LeFevre, and Dakota Slaugh. Superior cellists were Dave Burfitt, Carson Parslow, Jordan LeBeau and Casey White. Superior guitarists were Angela Slaugh and Rachael Delikat, and pianist Rose 1 Marie Peterson. The top ratings of the day were Paul violinists garnered by Wackowski and Marquita Slaugh and cellist Casey White who received superior ratings for their performances. The Federation Festival culminated a season of adjudicated competistudents tions for USOMATA which began when four students from USOMATA competed in the Region 3A Music Festival held at Wasatch High School in Hebcr. Receiving superior ratings for their Region 3A performances were Katie Austin, Paul Wackowski, Shaleene Hamblin of Neola, and Dave Burfitt. USOMATA was the only school in the region to receive all superior ratings, and Dave Burfitt received the only superior rating awarded in the festival for his outstanding performance of a cello concerto. Kathy Hanberg competed in the 2A region music festival where she received a superior rating for her participation in women's small vocal ensemble from group Altamont High School. Wackowski, Austin and Burfitt were selected to compete in the state solo and ensemble festival held at Northridge High School in Layton. Austin received an excellent plus for her viola solo, and Wackowski earned a superior rating and gold medal for his violin solo. Burfitt was performing with the Utah Valley Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on that weekend and could not compete at the state festival. Hollis Dixon and the Uintah High School Band will make up the color guard. g The ceremony is at 9 a. m., at the Post Office, conducted by Larry Rettig and Glen Alien. Reserved parking is planned for senior citizens and for persons with physical disabilities. The parade will start at 10 a.m., m front of the Post Office and will end in front of the Utah Army National Guard. The route is determined hy Utah Department of Transportation. The Parade Committee for the July 4, 2003 festivities has been busy making plans for the annual patriotic event. The theme for the parade, which is sponsored by Vernal City, is "LIBERTY" "JUSTICE" "PEACH." Any business, group, individual or organization that wishes to be in the parade should pick up an entry form at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce. The Grand Marshal for the parade will be J.J. Kerlin of the Elks, in recognition of the many services provided to the community by the Elks. The Elks will also be responsible for the fireworks display to be held that evening. The committee is chaired by Jim Barth and by Charles flag-raisin- Gray. Skect Richardson, who is serving with the National Guard, is an honorary co chairman this year. Also representing the Guard is Sgl. Shannon Pass. Committee members are Ken Bassett, representing Vernal City; Kerrie Shahan of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce as secre Girls State participants announced University (SUU) in Cedar C lty. The girls chosen by the Jensen Unit this year are: Kaydee Darnell, daughter of Kayleen Darnell, Shailey Christensen, daughter of Nate and Ruth Christensen,' and Chelsea Cook, daughter of Duane and Brenda Cook. During the week at SUU. the gills will icam the political process and develop a renewed love and respect for the United Slates and its flag. To be chosen, the girls must be seniors in the 2003-200- 4 school year. Contributors for this years Gills State arc Ladies of Elks and the Freda Phillips Trust. Annette Simons, a member of the Jensen Unit, attends Girls State as an associate director. N. Thank You!!! TriCounty Health Department and the TriCounty Safe Kids Chapter would like to thank the Vernal Area Community for their support of the Safe Kids Fair on Saturday morning, May 3. The event was a great success. Bikes, helmets and car seats were checked for safety. Fire safety was demonstrated, as well as the use of 9 1 1 emergency notification. The play is a comedy about a man who learns to really enjoy life through his invisible friend, a rabbit named Harvey. Tickets are $5 and can he purchased at the door or from any cast member.
