Pribtiln., It cannot be denied that in the United States, and more particu- THE larly in the West, there U a very general aympatliy with the Prussian in the prenent war. Whether we admit even to ou wives or not, wejare certainly plcused at the first news of rrushlan victory. Mot people on such a matter feel by a sort of inrtlncQImt there rc reasons und good ones why we, ns Ameri cans, should wish for the success of the Prussians. It Is true both the French and Prussian (lovernmcnts are essentially despotic; both are alike tnotmrchiul, and grnspl ng,wi th hut littio dill'ercnce in the mere forms of law, Put there is a youthful energy, earnestness of thought and spirit of progress toward the better in governmental' matters among the Prussians which Is greatly lucking tothe Lntiii'Unuis, The 'tradition of the Teutonic race is individuality, personal liberty; that of the Frank is a strong and bril- FRENCH WHIPPED. Most uot be under twelve antf-tf agr. Eastern Iffcws. i-- r, r con-necti- ou ll gled in tile very blood and marrow of French rulers; their diplomacy scetns little - more than refined treachery, and when an ofllcial today laughs at what lie seriously asserted yesterday it Is only regarded as the natural course of tilings. The French are brave, magnanimous and generous; but they have a government which cannot be trusted. During our late war Prussia was nt least neutral, if not in sympathy with us; France would have directly assisted in the disruption of our country, if she could only have the co operation of Kngland. The Kmperor flatly proposed mediation to Kngland; when refused he did nil lie could in forming a continental alliance against a sister republic, and the establishment of an empire on our border. His Mex-- lean scheme and his direct, menace of Texas,' con pled with the action of French consuls nt " d and New Orleans, meant any thing but friendship to us. Tho intrigues of Napoleon, his nlll- nnco with Spain in regard to Mexico and Cuba, and the Latin races in America, and making, the Gulf of Mexico a French lnkof together with the tone of ids acknowledged apologist, the Courier of New York, all were bused on the settled conviction that tho United States would forever bo and was his determination to further disunion by all menus in liis power. Another feature, not so often thought of, but still with some power, Is tho religious question. France Is regarded as the champion of tho temporal power of the Pope; and this is enough for that class of our people whose religious sympathies and prejudices are strong. Prussia Is clearly Protestant, and her language is that of tho great reformation of the fifteenth century. German unity is also a matter of sympathy in America, and this is -- ob3-taine- d Iticli-nron- d, tho distinctive Prussian Idea. It Is so much like our own idea of one homogeneous nation froni Atlantic to Pacific; this hope of a German nation, witii one language and one head, from tho Baltic to tho Alps. The idea of one German kingdom of fifty million people is indeed nn inspiring thought, one which makes us thrill with a feeling of involuntary sympathy. We Americans are more like the Prussians than the French; we have more of the Teutonic than tho Gallic element in our national composition. Political sympathy, too, has doubtless much force; there are millions of Germans scattered through tho North andbut few French., and these Germans were among tho most ardent supporters of our national unity. In the South tho case may be different. And finally, wo feel, that the great cause of human rights and progress would be more subserved by the triumph of Prussian Ideas in all Germany, than ly a continued division of tho latter, subject to French Intrigue atid influence. ycrcign foil between Front and Moutana, is now prepared to supply the trade with a choice quality of beer, ales and wines, aud greatly reduced prices.
