The mooting of the Liberal party of Utah, which took place in Salt Lake City on last Saturday evening, wa a significant demon- stration of sound principles. Although the ostensible object of the occasion was to rati fy the nominations before the people, tho issues of publicj policy were also presented In their true and unmistakable meaning, 2Iisf Excellency! Governor 'Woods, presided, and on opening' the meeting gave expression to a vbl that tlio Territory might toon become ennobled land dignified in her character by pursuing the plain and simple courso of right and duty. Ho encouraged tho advancement of true political intelligence, but his ad lrcss wiiT josculiary national and broad in tone.! The chief address of tho meeting was that of General George It, Maxwell, whose judgement is not behind his patriotism. In a thoroughly argumentative and logical speech, this gentleman reviewed tho situation in Utah generally, and Salt Lako City and county In particular. He argued that the hope of the Liberal party) of tho Territory depended upon an absolute exclusion of all favor toward those who practice tho crime of polygamy, and followed up his splendid denunciation- of that brutal custom by declaring that all those who are not for, are against the principles so declared: that the new departure in Utah must be complete, without fear of any charge that the speakers friends wej-- in sympathy with offenders against law and morality. There was no mistaking tho Generals views, for their interpretation reached straight out to the point beyond which all cavil and pretence of dishonest reformers aro vain. Disposing of that subject, which is not dignified with the status of a political question, tho speaker, amid tho applause of the multitude, took up the local affairs of the city of Salt Lake. With stubborn) facts and figures he exhibited tho enormous license system unber which thv trade of a" single locality is oppressed by official rapine to tho extent fnearly $ 150,-00- 0 jor annum; That this vast sum of monis ey not expended dn whole or part for tho municipal benefit and use, but is drained from the people without a word of explanation ns to its dispo-itioTo renmly tho corruption organized and nourbhed, by a systematic plundering of the citizens," the Liberal party comes into existence, declaring that, with tho uprooting of the barbaric immorality of this Territory, will como also tho wholesomo reformation of local government. In order to cllVcf these great ends the people aro called upon to send honest men to tho Legislature that, at tho head, the good work may bo commenced. General Maxwell closed by exhorting those present to give hearty support to the candidates for Council, Messrs, Kahn jand Walker, ns men, whoe integrity is a guarantee of their fitness to do faithful service. The enthusiasm with which tho names were mentioned foi tolls sccess. We had tho good fortuno of being present at tho meeting, and by request of somo Ti lends made a! few remarks ns to our. position, principal 'of which is that the Liberal Tarty cannot afford to aflllinto with any man or men who defiantly practise polygamy under anr pretence, but moro especially where they trample upon common sense and belle thenm-lve- s by assuming the guise of religion to Cover thcirfilthy abominations. These. are not new sentiments with us or tho Gentiles of Utah, and the moment the Lib- oral Tarty permits one of the licentious horde to, sail) under SU colors, the entire country will condemn it as tho shallowest kind of trickery. Such it would bo, and we aro proud that the people of Salt Lake City -- have made a declaration which admits of no mingling with such unfit associates. The best maniAntatiou of their views on the leading subject, was given at tho meeting of Saturday night, when one EH. B. Kelsey got upon the stand and declared his pride In being a polygamist and that he would-remaione; but that blatant fraud mutook is hearers, for rcarco had the lecher spoken ho foul word, when a storm of hisses and groans chastised him for hU effrontery. By a fiicndly interposition of the distinguished chairman, the fellow: was permitted to express his anger, but evidently well aware that henceforth the Liberal Tarty of Utah can dispense with tho aid of Mr. Kelsey and that dbreputablo ilk. Tho voice of the ratification meeting was a surety to that conclusion; and while claiming no desire to dictate, nor wishing to bo credited with or-- , igirmting tho suggestion, vc are satisfied that while the party recognized the parboiled adherence of three or four of these boasting felons, it has no right to honest support from any, and never could succeed. Tho Issuo came in time, and fortunately showed how much more ready to return to tho kingdom than acknowledge obedience to law are tho spewed dissemblers of this auspicious day.,, Wo congratulate tho Liberal Tarty on tho facti that it has no room for any f these. well-know- n rjfiox Txxxosajrn co. wxsTKEir THE LATEST DISPATCHER Another f.lill Between f.lace and Cobum Arranged. t Moro About tho Richmond Borgia.
