HAMMOND URGES CAREFUL WHITER DRIVING 1 Di.-tr.- Stay Tuned to KOVO TO CHINA NO TV AID TOTALS MILLION Accidents go up when the mercury goes down, and its not always fair weather when pood motorists pet topether, W. I). Hammond, Chairman of the State Road Commission, warned today in the midst of the season's most danperous driving conditions. Mr. Hammond made public a new set of safety winter driving based on exhaustive research by the National Safety Council's Committee on Winter Driving Hazards. The recommendations are made from actual comprehensive tests of automobile performance under actual snow and ice conditions. SEVEN SAFETY TIPS 1. Check brake linings for simultaneous gripping. Unequalized brakes start skiddinjf. 2. Tire chains are vital equipment during bad snow or ice weather. Good treads are helpful on wet pavement but cannot bite in on packed snow or ice Use chains. 3. Make sure that windshield wipers and defrosters are working, and that your lights are good. Use traffic beam when passing other cars. 4. Travel at reduced speeds on snow or ice, even when protected bv chains, and WATCH OUT FOR CHILDREN ON SLEDS. 5. Leave more room between you and the car ahead and don't try to pass on hills or curves and approach curves slowly. 6. Slow down in gear and Tump brakes to keep wheels from locking completely. 7. EXERCISE MORE CAUTION GENERALLY and open cowl ventilator to force out carbon monoxide gas, especially in old cars. REMEMBER : "An ounce of precaution may prevent the necessity of many pounds of cure.
