While the unborn child grew within its mother it received, along with nutrition from the mother's blood, the virus of a disease which was characterised by Osier as the greatest killer. In fact, of 100 such children half are killed before birth and so are denied altogether tbe privilege of life A quarter of them live long enough to give their mothers the pain of bearing them and the sorrow of Most of the surviving losing them before their first birthday quarter carry the marks of their disease with them deformed of body, defective of mind, blind, a burden to the community, a cross to their parents and a tragedy to themselves. Eight out of every 100 expectant women examined In 16 clinics in various American cities had this disease, syphilis, which is transmissable from mother to nnborn child. With suitable treatment early In pregnancy 91 per cent of these conceptions would et)d in the birth of babies free from any evidence of lurking disease. This constitute at once a triumph of medical science, and a challenge to every citizen in every community. The triumph consist In the saving or 91 out of 100 infanta threatened by congenital syphilis. The challenge consist Jn the opportunity to make modern diagnosis and treatment available to every Infected pregnant woman. But many bidden case of syphilis in expectant mother will be found only wlen a blood test become m pari of every prenatal examination. Then physician can administer the life saving treatment and the ieast privileged, unborn child will be given an opportunity for life and health. The mass of case of syphilis are contracted betweea the age of 18 and 46. About 20 per cent are contracted under the age of 20 years, and approximately one-ha- lf between 20 and 80 yean. There waa a time when marriage could be entered into without ae much ae a license. Now a license is required and is not resented. The laws of health and decency today are showing us that there are certain things that should be definite prerequisites to be able to obtain a mart iage license. One of these Is a test for syphilis, and when Utah has realized the Importance of this disease. It will require a clearance on syphilis before granting a license. It is more reasonable in terms of human lives than a license plate to go on the automobile, and many more lives are involved annually than the present high death rate from automobiles. Syphilis in a communicable stage should be a barrier to marriage, because it threatens not only the person married but also the children of such a marriage. The emotional disturbance mars the happiness of Bush a marriage. Many States have or are now proexaminations, Including a blood test Utah has posing no such law, but needs It. Anyone with a sense of responsibility to his or her partner In examination of both parties marriage will feel that the concerned is reasonable and constructive in Its provisions. Would v ill Utah be progressive, or lag in this it not be a step forward? . respect? 9 yy TRADE IN YOUR OLD" RANGE ON A NEW MONARCH range-buildin- We have just received a carload shipment of Monarch ranges from the factory.
