Show December, 1936 Fifty Years Ago Today A Buggy Ride from Provo to Provo Bench. ' . VOICE THE I'm a goiu "Good murmtig. out over Piuni Bruch. Come on and go loo. lleie. pull this lap robe over your knees, its a mite chilly when we get up oil top the Bench. I got this rig down at that lidry stable next to the Mill Race on Main street. That lit !e brown mare on the near side is named Nellie and that off horse is Peanuts. This rig is little better . than a Heaton and Pierpont over on that corner are makin' some castings this morning. That will save you folks from goiu to Salt Lake for your $tove grates. This is the part of town where people first settled until they moved up on the raise where the First National p is. Bank and the East That old adobe house on the right there' is the Carter place and that next one is where Jeralus Roberts lives. I suppose he still fishes with minnies, he and Hyt Smith. And this is the north end of Fifth West. John Warners frame house on the left and Joe brick on the Claika p Nellie, Peanuts, weright. re a gittin out into the country now. This is the Provo River. When we first come to the valley the InTimpan-ogo,dians called this river " which means Rocky Botand it sure is. And the tom, name Utah" means "Land of the High Mountains. I think that old done a lot Buck, Anktee-Wattof this naming. Funny about him, he took two more wasnt it squaws after the Mormons came. You know Sam, things look different around here. Its gittin civilized. There used to be just a oneway road through the brush across lhis bottoms, and now we could pass a load of hay anywhere. And do you know that fourteen years ago this whole bottoms, from the river to the dugway, was under waterl The river was a half mile wide.. I . suppose we' will always recollect the high water of 72. That log house on the right, be buck-board- Co-o- two-roo- Gid-da- low the dugway, is Andrew Forsyths,. I always remember Andrewr by tho.se sandy whiskers of his. On the left is John and Alma Browns house; and right under the hill by Spring Creek is Steve Jones'. L'h Huh, he married Laura Johnson. And you know this dugway when we f.rst come here was so steep we could haidly get up with the running gears. Now-- , I bet Nellie and Peanuts could pull 1200 pounds up here if wed give em a few rests. You know, Sani, I saw in the Deseret News that a feller in England, built a buggy and put rub her on for tires. Wouldnt that be somethin instead of these steel tiresl Land skesl wonder what tlh woi Ids a coinin to. Now this is the second dugway. Johnny Smiths house over there on the right and Joe Morgans on the other side. And look way over there to the West, thats John Turners quarter. You know, hes got some fin crops since they made this Enterprize Canal and got some water from the river. It heads way up there by the "high banks by Sam Carters. Now we're on top of the Bench. Sam, did you ever see so much sagebrush? Just as far as you can see. They say its that way clear to Battle Creek. house is That adobe Kings place. He married that Welch girl. She was kind of sickly. Never could work in the fields wi'h men. She was a sister to that girl Ainos Skinner married. Amos has three boys now; Dave, Hy, and they call the baby Morgan. adobe on the That right is Jeff Patten's. Hes got a quarter here. They got five children; Tom, Will, Alva, Phoebe, and thebaby is Wyman. Young Tom married a Billings girl and they live on that other quarter. Yep, that place over there is the Berry quarter. Major Berry, he come here from Texas. Hes got about IS acres in hops and some sugar cane too and some lucern and I'll be doggoned if that lucern aint doin right well. Itd be right smart if we could make lucern grow good here. They call this ditch the Berry ditch. You know the big ranal has been puttin out more water the last eight years since they made it bigger. That stock they say has been sold as high as thirty dollars a share! And Major Berry has got 48 shares and Jeff Patten must have about 30. one-roo- m two-roo- ft Ward Qreetings I a And there were in the same country, shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And, io, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, And that log school house over there is pretty fine. Its about twenty feet long and oh, I guess about sixteen wide. They got those fogs up South Fork. That shanty over there about a half mile is the Jim Loveless place. He married Julia Ekins and they have got two kids, Nell and little Jim. That other log house across the road is Arnasa Mech-ant- s. He moved out here two or three years ago. You know Aniasa married the Cobbly girl from Battle Creek. They had three kids, Ed. Amas and Lorene. He lost his wife and then he married Charley Grays widow. She had one boy. And this shanty on the left is the Kinsey quarter. And over there on the right there is Newel Knight's quarter. And that little brick house on the left is young Newts. He married the Straiten girl. They come from down on the Muddy. Sam, we've travelled about five miles in an hour and a half. Nellie and Peanuts sure move along. Sam Dilworth is building a rock house out here west of the mouth of the canyon and I think that is the last house till we get to Battle Creek. Out there by Dilworths Pete Wentz Has got a forty. You know Sam, David John, the Stake President, is thinking of making a ward out here and puttin Pete Wentz in as bishop if he will sell this forty and1 get some land out there by the log school house. And Ill bet Pete does it. He sure will if bis wife Minerva says so. Git around here, Nellie. You too, Peanuts. We got to be gittin home er we won't get no supper. one-roo- m It i Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great jov, .which shall be tt all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swadling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward ) men. (Luke "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy," has been a comforting thought down through the years, and at this season it will still mellow the thoughts and actions of man. The Christmas spirit, with its its generpeace, its tenderness, osity, and gladness is in abundance everywhere. WTe need only to open our hearts and let it enter. In so doing, hate, jealousy, greed and vanity will banish. With the spirit of the Nazarenc as a guiding principal, empires have been built, without it they crumble into decay. With this same individuals "have become spirit, masters of men, and benefactors to the race. Without it one becomes a "Lone Wolf prowling selfishly about seeking for an opportunity to spring upon some defensless prey. As the Angels of old greeted the shepherds on that first Christmas, we greet our brethren and sisters at this Christmas season. As we celebrate Christ's birthday again we are reminded of his teachings in regard to the brotherhood of man and the joy that comes to anyone who holds that brotherhood dearly and unselfishly. We are firm believers in the philosophy that one of the most precious riches a man may enjpy in this life is numerous, worthy friendships and that this wealth can be ours if we are willing to be a friend in the sense that Christ taught in regard to the brotherhood of man. We can think of no better wish foY you this Christmas season than that this coming year may bind you closer to old friends and bring many flew ones and that you It is easy to get everything you you might also enjoy health, peace and want, provided you first learn to the necessities of life. do without jhe things you cannot Sincerely yours, get.
