C. (CTNS) luncheon in the nations capital the other day, Mike Mike Wallace Interviews had Wallace of ABC-TV- s a hearty appetite. This 'despite the fact that the night before he had matched ,wits on the segregation issue with the redoubtable Senator Eastland of Mississippi. In fact, it is obvious that Wallace has an appetite for controversy. One of the most articulate men in television today, Wallace is enthusiastic about the purpose of his Sunday night series, which he says will be successful not merely by asking questions that lead to revealing answers, but by stimulating discussion among viewers when the show is off the dir. Wallace believes his series is one that will need time to build a strong following, and cites steadily rising ratings to prove the show is catching on. He ABC-Tseries developed points out that the present out of a very popular New York City show seen there four nights a week, where he had ample opportunity to quiz all kinds of people in a comparatively short time. The network series has already featured a retired movie actress, a racketeer figure (who got the program in. trouble with a lurid tirade against the police), the head of the Ku Klux Klan, a major league pitcher, a senator and other figures in the public mind or eye. When asked about the content of his fan mail Wallace gave this or pan mail, in some instances candid answer: To some people Im a hero; to others a heel. Viewers take sides ,and thats as it should be. Sometimes it takes what I term abrasive questions to get to the heart of the topic. There is no apparent lack of guests willing to appear, despite the growing Wallace repution for candor on the air. WaJIace has his sights set on a former Presgenident of the United States and a retired five-sta- r eral. Following the interview,, Ted Yates, who produces the show, took the Hollywood trail to( invite Zsa ,Zsa Gabor and Lili St. Cyr to be interviewed. Yates stressed that some of the programs remain in the planning stage for many months. Said he, Were projecting a show about an author whose book is only half written. However, Wallace avoids definite commitments far in advance to keep his telecasts as timely as possible.
