Show f Pare Eight ... ....i. . and Game Elects 57 Directors Many Billlions Of flew Capital Fish Billions of dollars of new capital will be required to meet the mounting demand for coal within the next decade, says the president of a major soft coal com- pany. He estimates the 1965 demand at 728,000,000 tons, as compared with substantially, less than 500,000,000 this year. Markets which areexpected to provide the greatest growth are the utilities, industrial coke ovens to suuply steel plants, and export This anticpiated surge in coal demand will require the opening of many new, high capacity mines. And the capital cost, in this day of highly mechanized coal mining, will be very great. That has made necessary larger corporate organ-zatiowithinthe industry, and these are being brought about through mergers, consolidations and purchases. To quote the spokesman again: Only the large career1 company with sound finances can have ready access to the capital markets to obtain the large amounts of new caiptal which-th- e growing coal industry will need. He also pointed out that the United Mine Workers look favorably upon mechinzation and the trend toward larger producing units. The welfare of the highly, paid miners, obviously, depends upon the walfare of the industry, and upon its ability to meet competition and hold and expand markets. The temd in coal simply recognizes the facts of life as they now exist, and it works to the lasting benefit of the operators, miners and consumers.
