Dr. T. J. Parmley, professor of physics and chairman of the new scholarship program for Utah, this week announced that Utahs share in the funds will be $280,000. The ultimate aim of the program is to interest more high school students in science careers and to keep the United States abreast of Russia in the science race. The scholarship program will help to achieve this aim, Dr. Parmley has said, by improving the quality of instruction in the sciences at the high school level. The University of Utah will offer a hew degree to teachers who study under the scholarships a Master of Science Education. Teachers in every state are eligible to apply for the National Science Foundation grants. ''For grants through the University of Utah, the teachers of Utah and the intermountain region will receive preference, Dr. Parmley has said. Scholarship winners will begin their year of study next -- First prize was a blue ribbon for newspaper advertising in competition with 146 brewers in the United States. OShea, executive secretary of the brewers as The research, he went on, is needed especially to insure a continuing adequate supply of the proper type of coal for coke to be used in steel production. It takes a ton of coal for each ton of steel manufactured, and steel production is growing. By 1960, Mr. Campbell predicts, free world output will reach 300 million tons a year. And American coal will be needed abroad as well as here. Currently, for example, a sizeable volume of U. S. coal is going to West German steel mills. On the subject of overall demand for coal, Mr. Campbell said The WINTER TREAD there was little question in his about the nation being aware of the power and the glory which coal has achieved as a business destined to stand side by side with all of the rest of the nations industrial giants. We have virtually unlimited reserves of coal and the most efficient coal industry on earth.
