Reaches Agreement September 1 6 at U.S. Geneva Works With Mine Workers If Visitors to the Geneva Works Family Day Open House next Friday, September 16, will spend approximately two or three hours within the plant during their tour. Huge new parking lots have been completed for the occasion since the tours through the big steel plant will be by bus. More than 40 buses will be used throughout the plant to move the big crowds The tour will start at Gate House No. 1 where the new park ing facilities have been built. Get' ting aboard the bus there the guests will be driven by the scrap preparation yard to the general maintenance building largest of its kind west of the Mississippi River where they will unload and have the opportunity to see the many shops which are housed there. After visiting generalmain-tenancthey will drive by the railroad marshalling yards past the two rotary railroad car dumpers, seeing the coal storage and the iron ore storage areas as they do. Thence past the coke ovens and the coal chemical installations and back by the three huge blast furnaces to the open hearth furnace department. Special ramps have been built to make the open hearth furnaces more accessible and once again guests 'will depart from the buses to see this important opera tion in action. After visiting the open hearth .department, the buses will take the visitors to the rolling mills where they will follow a hot ingot of steel from the reheating furnaces or soaking pits all the way through its various phases of rolling- until it becomes a finished product. g After visiting the structural mill, the roll shop, and the hot sheet mill, the guests will arrive at the refreshment and exhibit tent. Kaiser Steel Corporation has an with the reached agreement United Mineworkers of America covering union employees at its Sunnyside, Utah, and Raton, New Mexico, coal mining operations, it was announced today by George McMeans, vice president in charge of operations. The terms and conditions followed the general pattern earlier reached in other segments of the industry. Principal provisions call for a wage increase of $1.20 per day effective September 1, 1955, and an additional eighty cents per day increase effective April 1, 1956 a total of two dollars per day. Time and a half will be paid for all Saturday work and double time will be paid for any Sundays worked. Previously, premium payments were made on the basis of the sixth and seventh consecutive days. The wage increase means an addition of almost $350,000 annually to the Sunnyside operations payroll alone. Total payroll costs a Sunnyside will amount to more than $3,750,000 yearly. Kaiser Steels coal mine at Sunnyside, Utah, employs about 750 miners who produce more, than tons of coal annually for shipment to the companys stee mill at Fontana, California. The company employs about 25 miners at its newly acquired coal mining properties near Raton, New Mexico. Calvin Holloway of Dragerton, Utah, is among 75 physicians in Portland 6 this week (September to attend the tenth annual cancer postgraduate conference offered at the University of Oregon medical school in Portland. The conference will cover the diagnosis and treatment of malignant neoplasms. Guest lecturers for the five day session include Dr. Kenneth Sawyer, staff surgeon at the Denver General hospital in Colorado, Dr. John A. Gius, professor of surgery at the State University of Iowa college of medicine in Iowa, Dr. James F. Nolan, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southern California medical school, Dr. William Gardner and Dr. Frank Howell, both of Portland, and Mrs. Gordon Smith, from .Arch Cape, Oregon. This Wednesday Trinity Guild holds its first meeting of the year at 7 :30 p.m. at the church. All women of Trinity are members of the Guild, which will continue to meet the second Wednesday of each month. On Saturday the Servers Club will have an important meeting at the church beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday the church school will resume, with a family worship service (either Morning Prayer or Holy Communion without sermon) beginning at 9 a.m. Following this family service will be classes for the youngsters and and adult class for parents.
