A. regular meeting of the Eastern Utah District Council of the Holmes Safety Association was held last Thursday evening at Car- bon College. Reports were heard from each chapter and E. O. Jackson, general superintendent of the Inde- pendent Coal and Coke Company, was the principal speaker. He spoke on the problem of a sealed area following an incipient fire in the Kenilworth re-openi- ng mine. A certificate showing that 100 per cent of the employees of the Sunnyside No. 3 mine, Kaiser Steel Corporation, have been trained in first aid, was presented to the mine employees at. the meeting. The accident report maintained by the Eastern Utah District Council shows that during the month of January there were 15 mine accidents, 14 of which were non-fatand one in which a man lost his life.. Accidents and the frequency for the various mines were shown as follows: Book Cliffs, no accidents fojr 4,189 man-houWorked; Castle ' one accident for 18.179 man Gate, hours work, for, a frequency of 55.01; Clear Creek, no accidents and 14,336 man-houworked; Kenilworth, no accidents and 36, 291 man-houworked; Columbia, no accidents and 53,104 man-hou..worked; Geneva (Horse Canyon), one accident and 79,551 man-houworked, a frequency rate of 12.57; Hiawatha, three accidents, 36,336 man-houworked for a frequen cy of 82.56; Kaiser Steel, three work- accidents, 89,453 33.54 ; Liberty, ed, a frequency-oone accident, 12,395 man-houworked, a frequency of 80.68; Rains, one accident, 3,267 manhours worked, a frequency rate of 0 306.09; Royal, two 'accidents, man-houworked, a frequency of 95.79; Spring Canyon, three accidents, one fatality, 23,677 man-houworked for a frequency of 126.71, and Wattis, no accidents, worked. Deputy Fowler submitted his resignation to the Carbon County Commission. No replacement was named. In his resignation the officers aid he would take a position with Utah Motor Club. Carbon County Sheriff Joseph Holman also recently resigned to v join the Motor Club. Hew Patrol Chief Appointment of Lyle Hyatt, 42, Price, veteran trooper of file Utah Highway Patrol, as patrol superintendent, was announced late Friday by Jay C. Newman, state public safety commissioner. Mr. Hyatt succeeds Marion A. Snow effective March 1. Mr. Snow has resigned to enter private business at Gunnison.
