This is the earliest date on record in Utah for the taking of rainbow spawn. Rainbow normally spawn in the at a Denver country club had an unusual experience. The chef for the occasion was the President of the United States. He served a beef and Vegetable stew. President Eisenhower did this to help publicize a nation-wid- e promotion which the beef and vegetable people have undertaken to increase the sale of their products. This years beef supplies are of record dimensions. Vegetables are also coming to market in great abundance. The producers, along with others concerned in the distribution of these basic foods, decided that the way to solve the problem was to step up consumption by aggressive advertising and other promotional techniques not by seeking subsidies or supports. This is an example that all ag-- . ricultural producers should consider closely. It is clear that the situation has gotten out of hand. Through careful selective breeding over more than 'a quarter of a century the 18,(100 rainbow spawners kept at the hatchery have been moved ahead a full half year in their spawning habits. Distribution of eggs from this early spawning stock to others of the States 12 hatcheries means a full utilization of the fisheries facilities during, at least ten months of each year. Without these early eggs the hatcheries would operate at full scale during a much shorter period. It also means the planting of larger fish over a longer period of time each year. The three to six year old spawners at the Springville hatchery produce upwards of five million eggs "each 'fall. Another two million rainbow eggs are taken each year from domestic stocks held at the Kamas and White-rochatcheries. Purchase of another nine million eggs from private hatchery sources both within and outside the state brings the total average of such eggs processed for planting into Utah waters from the States twelve hatcheries to an average of sixteen million eggs during the past several years.
