Show Tuesday, March THE DRAGfERTON TRIBUNE Pare Six Coal Is the Key We frequently read of great and costly expansion plans projected by leading industries. But few of us, probably, stop to think that these plans could never be consummated if it werent for other industries which are not mentioned. As an example, the automobile 'makers will spend more than on new plants and this year. And the steel equipment and electric power industries are also engaged in large expansion projects. All three of these basic enterprises are dependent to a considerable extent on a fourth indussoft coal. It takes a ton of try coal to make a ton of steel; and the average automobile requires two tons of steel. And coal is the fuel used in the generation of a very large percentage of our electricity, including that consumed in our biggest cities and most concentrated industrial areas. This explains, in part, why top industrial leaders, government officials and others are emphasizing the fact that, despite the growing use of other fuels and despite whatever is done to make atomic energy serve peacetime pursuits, we must have coal. And that means that we must have a vigorous and profitable coal industry for only that kind of industry can be trusted to meet the greatly increased demands that will come in future years. The growth of demand for electric energy reflects, more completely than probably that of any other .business or service, the growth of economic and business activity and the scale of living. W. C.
