If given after the onset of symptoms, it will not change the course of the disease, or prevent paralysis. It must be given after exposure and before the onset of clinical sgns and symptoms. Even without gamma globulin, a child affected vhth poliomyelitis has at to one chance least a of escaping paralysis. Gama globulin is in extremely short supply. Most Americans, especially in this area, manage to work in one vacation each year. With new cars and vacation money they range far and wide. The Mr. American that I talked to yesterday was a Utah traveler. He came recently from another state and thought this respite from work gave him an opportunity to get acquainted with his adopted state. He visited such international shrines as: Bryce Canyon National Park with its fantastic and grotesque spires, castles, bridges and pinnacles formed by erosion; Cedar Breaks National Monument in which some forty distinct pastel shades of red, purples and yellows may be recognized; Bryce National Park with its tremendous canyon one half mile deep and one mile wide; then along the Mt. The entire East Carbon area has been sprayed with aldrin for grasshop- per control during the last two weeks. A large percentage of the hoppers are now dead and many others which are still alive show sickness and will eventually die, according to Robert L. Hassell, county agricultural agent. Extension George Knowlton, from Utah the State entomologist Agricultural College, reports that aldrin, which was used in this job, kills slowly and that hoppers, after feeding on aldrin, eat very little foliage. They may remain sick for considerable time before they die. The entire spray job was done by Buck Davis of the local flying service. Mr. Davis was contacted by the Rotary Club of the East Carbon area, who handled this entire project. His emergency treatment consisted of intermittent positive pressure oxygen therapy to insure enough air, and this was given by Mrs. Ruth Manchester, R.N., assisted by the boys parents and Miss Teddy Trujillo, nurses aide. The positive pressure breathing device, the only such apparatus in the area, has been owned by the Carbon Medical Service Association for about six months, 1)utNthis is the first time physicians credit it with actually saving a life.
