Navy whose home is in Columbia, is home perman- ently after being discharged the 20th of February 1953. He entered the service May25th 1948. He took his training at San Diego, and was immediatly sent over seas, where heAvas stationed at. the USS Naval supply. center, and the Com. Sta., on Guam M. 2. months. He refor twenty-on- e turned home for a leave then was sent overseas again, aboard the USS Kennebec, A O, 36. He again came home on September second 1950, stationed aboard the USS Bairoko. On November 14, 1950 the Bair oko headed to the Far East and until her arrival back in San Diego, August 15,1951, she opera-e- d out of Yokosuha, Japan on antisubmarine training duty. The ship underwent avability back in the states and the crew enjoyed leaves. She then headed for the orient once more. On December 1, 1951, she participated in A S" W duty until early February when she picked up the famed Marine fighter-bombCheckerboard Corsair and at proKohje squad ceeded to Korean waters. On February 17, the first actual combat-srri- ke in the seven years of Bairoko was launchthe history ed at enemy targets behind communist lines on the west coast of Korea. For two months the Bairoko and the Checkerboard figured in nation-wid- e new's.
