Show rx rare i.iAu'W Coal Association Asits Increase in DepletionAllovance Arepresentative of the National Coal association recently appeared before the Senate Financ- ing committee which is considering revision of the Internal Revenue code. He pointed out that no country in the world can survive even a potential, enemy without sufficient coal. He then urged the committee to concur in a House - of Representatives deci- sion, made sometime ago; to raise coals depletion rate from the present five per cent to 10 per cent. This action, he observed, is desperately needed. The depletion allowance amounts tc a credit on the income tax. It is given to various natural resource industries in order. to make, it possible for., them to develop new properties as old ones wear out, which is an enormously costly matter. A coal mine or an oil well or a stand of timber is gradually used up. Once it is gone, there must be another to take its place if the nation is to be adequately served. -The five per cent depletion rate now given coal is the lowest toy far any natural resource enter prise. Oil and natural gas, for in stance, receive TVz per cent. The coal representative did not con sider this excessive at all indeed, he praised congress for having established it at that figure. But he pointed to it as an example of the injustice now being done to the equally essential coal industry. The majority preport of the House Ways and Means committee observed that, according to the testimony given before it, the five per cent rate is of little practical value, and that coal is in need for more favorable tax treatment because of the intense competition it must meet from other sources of energy. The whole congress should agree. Wednesday, DRAGERTON, UTAII THE DRAGEETON TRIBUNE 4 FORMERLY Owned and Operated WASATCH by STORES PRICE TRADING CO.
