The fire was reported originating in the upstairs of the Diamantis club building. The three buildDiamanti, Avalon hotel ings, building and another building adjacent housing a bakery and barber shop, were considered to be a complete loss. Responding 'to the fire were the two fire companies from Sunnyside and Dragerton in addition to the Price- - and Helper fire companies. The cause of the fire was not clearly defined but some consider that defective wiring may have been the cause. This is the biggest fire that has hit the Carbon county area in many years. Early reports were that there were no casualties. The fire came under control between four and five oclock in the morn- Information Important To All Anyone interested in the Fed- eral Social Security program is encouraged to write the Provo office or call in and talk to a representative while he is in Price. This week, fellows, we would like to pass on to you a few things that J. D. Dillard of the Federal Grazing Service has mentioned. We have poachers, law violators and thieves who persist in robbing our sportsmen of the game and fish that have been labor-ousplanted and maintained at our expense; however, our number one menace now is FIRE. Few people have been into or near one of these game killing infernos. It is impossible to explain the terrible helpless feeling it causes as the flames race pines, through' the beautiful spreading death and waste on all ly sides. The game that perishes in a matter of minutes would 'take years to restock but here is the really sad part of it. As these wind-sweflames pass on and leave a black, scarred skelton of a once forest there our real problem begins. There is no vegetation to absorb the rains, no means of stopping the small trickles of water and In a very short time we have the first evidences of that killer erosion. With each successive rain the (Continued on Page 16) pt The old stork with an eye on the Korean situation has not started into full production as yet. Southeast Utah Sheriffs Posses to Select 1950 Rodeo Queen Candidates A new way of selecting a queen and attendants for the Robbers Roost Roundup of 1950 will be inovated this year with the candidates to be selected by the various sheriffs posses in the southeastern Utah area, it has been announced by the general rodeo committee headed by Harvey Thomas. In the past, all girls desiring to try for the coveted honors were allowed to file application and then the three were selected from the field of applicants. This year, each posse group, some ten in all, will submit the names of their candidates following a local elimination and these names are-t- o be in to the Carbon Sheriffs posse by Saturday, July 15. On July 19, all candidates thus selected will meet at the rodeo grounds In Price and from these entries will be selected the queen and her two aides. The judging will take place at 7: 00 p jxl by an impartial group of individuals. The girls, as in the past, will be selected on their horsemanship, personality and the qualities of the hojse they will ride during the rodeo events. Each of the three girls will be-- given $50 by the rodeo committee with which she is to purchase a western riding outfit to wear during the rodeo. The Carbon County Sheriffs posse is cooperating with the sponsors to make this the biggest show yet and all citizens of the city are urged to don western attire during the week of the rodeo, or from July 24 through July 29. Mayor A. D. Keller will issue a proclamation next week calling upon all citizens to cooperate in creating the proper atmosphere for this western event. It is also planned that a kangaroo court will be set up to enforce the mayors proclamation. The rodeo will get underway on the evening of July 27 and will be presented the following Friday and Saturday nights, July 28 and 29. I |
