With white or pastel curtains, use narrow borders or peasant print trimming which can be purchased at a notions counter for just a few or several rows cents. Or, rick-rac- k tains are used. Cut flowers or leaves out of the mending tape and apply scatter fashion to the curtains simply by pressing with a hot iron. These give a novel decorative touch to the room as well as added life to the curtains. On the other hand, some fringe or other trimming might be used for edging the drapes, thu? giving them a whole new aspect, very pos- e they dre exposed to sun as well as windows which leak. Dont feel too low about this situation because it, too, can be helped. If the draperies are light and yoti want to cover all the waded spots completely, plan to use a fairly dark dye. If you dont want too dark a color On the draperies, then remove the original color with remover. Check a sample of the material to see whether the drapes will take both color remover and dye since many of these require hot water. Interesting results are often achieved by dyeing printed draperies because the print remains and background color is make darker. You can outline the print with light colored yarns, thus giving interesting texture and new coor to the drapes. If the drapes have been lined, remove the lining and see what the reverse side looks like. Frequently this may have been saved from fading and often this has an Inter esting texture of its own. In this case, simply reverse the drapes, lining the side that has already been used. If its necessary you can add some fringe. Deep V arrangements of this can be very effective in living and dining rooms. When its essential to dye a drapery a darker color that is less effective in the room, you might consider adding a border that will lighten them sufficiently to be attractive Add Length, Width By These Methods There are several ways to remedy skimpy draperies whether they have shrunk through 'cleaning or laundering, or were just too small in the beginning. The easiest way Is to add a clever border along the inside edges of the drapes, and possibly along the bottom, too. Wlien drapes are plain, choose a sibly more effective than they were originally. If the color of curtains needs refreshing, plan to use the washing machine to do the work quickly and without streaking. An agitator will spread the color evenly. Use These Tricks To Lengthen Curtains Ruffled curtains which have bed come or worn out by the youngsters pulling at the lower corners are among the easiest of curtain problems to remedy. Simply remove the old ruffles and add two or three rows of ruffling straight across the bottom. If curtains have shrunk, ruffles all around the curtain answer the problem perfectly. Make the new ruffle wide enough so that the resulting curtain will look truly luxurious. ' Ruffles and fringe, loops and such added to curtains do not have to be of the same material as the original curtain. In fact, contrasting fabric, color or design might be even more effective. One point you should observe, however. If your curtains are very old and look obviously that way, do what you can to restore the original new look with proper laundering, starching and ironing to add body. If you are adding very new and crisp jnaterial, its best to wash this a few times before using so the contrast between old and new is not too pronounced. What about marquisette curtains which have small tears and pulls in them? They should be completely discarded or is there any possible of using them? if the curtains are white or ecru, select colored mending tape which goes well in the room in which cur- rain-staine- , , ! - vv- -, I A f" A' , ' 1 ? v v and fringe for lengthening curtains. of colored bias might be used with much the same effect. For those who like to keep the .kitchen cool and uncluttered with curtains, an excellent idea uses wide ruffling to frame the windows. The ruffling may be purchased ready rpade or sewed at home from remnants. Run it around the window with rods or insert elastic. Kate differs with me very definitely, and wants me to know it. The article that enraged her was intended for those American women who are worried about money. These women, and there are millions of them, are managing incomes that range from $3,000 to $6,000 a year. With the rising demands of their children, the drain of visible and hidden taxes, the increased cost of living, they find themselves in a constant state of anxious discouragement. There no is to ends make way simply meet, to save the husband and father the responsibility that is killing him, to satisfy the demands of the children. Hundreds of letters come to me every yea, emphasizing this predicament, and it was in answer to one of them that I quoted in my article the case of a Polish family that arrived in America only seven years ago, and that is now independent; the daughter prosperously married, the son in a contracting business with his father, the mother secure in the home she is so proud to keep comfortable and happy for them. I said that in the beginning these exiles rented three rooms for $26 a month, near the river in an unfashionable neighborhood, and that both son and daughter worked in high school days, so that of the combined earnings went into government bonds Fresh MY MAIL INsentful and two-thir- ds Button trimmings are lending clever decorative touches to hats and bags. If nylon is too warm for you, use the cottons which are sheer and cool. Theres little news in colors in hosiery, but theres lots of news in heel fashions on hosiery. You can still get the conservative types if you prefer, but interesting effects can be achieved with the larger, outlined heels if you want to dramatize the legs. More than that, to completely change ones way of life is a most stimulating adventure. To stop wor . J Is Infuriating rying about ones social standing with utterly unimportant acquaintances, to stop all consideration of what is the right environment for the children, to maka a game of getting way under the income instead of eternally overspending it this is really to live, and .certain harassed anxious housewives never have known real living. But this advice infuriated Kate Bush, and her letter told me why. Kate Bush doesnt need such counsel. She has solved her problem by moving to the country, which she truthfully asserts Is a much "more wholesome place for children than a cheap city slum., Our youngsters go to a fine school, her letter says, and to Sunday school, and to a show every two weeks. They have pets and amusements galore, chickens, ducks, rabbits, skates, skis, sleds, every kind of fun at home. They never tease for money because there is no place to spend it Of course, that is an ideal solution for all problems, mothers, dads, the childrens, the budget everything. But it was not for women like Kate Bush that I wrote. It was for the troubled, ones, the bewildered ones, who feel that everything in the home must be as comfortable and luxurious as things always were in Mamas house, and who simply cant manage It today. To such I give the old advice, get put from under it all. Move to the unfashionable neighborhood it neednt be a slum. As a matter of fact, unfashionable neighborhoods near the river or he bay, or up on the hill or out in the fields on the fringes of the city will be the choicest locations of all in a few years. When I was married in 1908, large sunny flats on the river in New Yorks upper east side, running from 40th to 90th Street, were rented for $20 and $25 monthly. That is New Yorks most elegant Mayfair now. If and the if is underlined you can move your family, as Kate Bush did, to country freedom, vegetable garden, pets, skates, skis. But so ideal an arrangement is not within reach of many of the housewives who find themselves caught in the confusions of a changing world, and have not the courage to realize that at such times each of us must make her ofwn world, sweep away past sensitiveness and prejudice, and give her.children an honest view of tomorrow. If you are living over your income, then try living under it. It is ' much more restful. Released by VVNU Feature ' |
