Show Teesday, August 3, 1943 10-2- YEAR OLDS TO REGISTER FOR TRUJILLO MUST 5 DRAFT BETWEEN AUG. 30-SEP- 10 DIE FOR T. MAY 2G SLAYliiG OLDER AGE GROUPS TO SIGN UP FIRST WITH OLDS TO RECEIVE INITIAL CALL R JUDGE SETS SEPT. 11 FOR EXECUTION BEFORE FIRING SQUAD V All American men 18 through 25 must register for the new draft between August 30 and September 18, an order issued from President Harry S. Truman last week stated. Eighteen year olds, not subject 21 -- month draft, were allowed to begin enlisting in the armed services last Wednesday, July 21. By volunteering for one year and then serving a longer period in the reserves these 18 year olds may avoid the draft later. However, the law specified that only 461,000 of the 18 year olds may be accepted and this mark was reached, from all reports, during the first day of enlistments. Major General Lewis B. Her-she- y, selective service director, that all men 18 emphasized through 25, unless they already are in the active armed services, to the must register. Whether or not a man is exempt from the draft makes no difference, he said. All must register, unless they now are in the regular forces and on active duty. General Hershey estimated that this means approximately 9,500,-00- 0 men will sign up at Americas 4,000 draft offices in the period beginning August 30. The registration dates are stag 20-d- ay with men 25 signing up first, men 24 next and so on. Men born in 1922 after August 30 will register first of all on August 30. These are men of 25 who would be ineligible after one more birthday. Next to register will be all born in the year 1923. Some of these will be 24, some 25. But all born in 1923 will register August gered, Joe Garcia Trujillo, 45, Castle Gate, was found guilty of murder in the first degree last Friday night by a jury of twelve men after deliberating for close to four hours and after having received the case just prior to adjournment for dinner at about 6:30 p. m. The jury went into closed session at approximately 8:00 p. m. and returned the verdict of guilty near midnight Only the verdict was tendered by the jury without any recommendations. Trujillo was charged in an information with the fatal shooting of Max Lopez, 47, Hiawatha, on the night of May 26 on highway 10 south of Price. The defendant heard the verdict with the same calm that characterized him throughout the five-da-y trial. The only sign of emotion was revealed, by the defendant's wife who broke down and had to be removed from the court room. Trujillo sat through the entire trial at the side of his attorneys, Edward Sheya and B. L. Dart, while several witnesses testified including the two material witnesses, Joe Mandragon and Joe Herrera, who were present when Mr. Lopez was killed. The defendant himself took the witness stand on the last day and remained there through direct and cross examination for four and lf hours. While on the stand, Trujillo admitted to giving false answers to questions under oath at the inquest held on May 28. He stated that the answers at that time. were given under with Mandragon whom he accused of shooting Lopez. He claimed Mandragon used a gun taken out of the glove corn- - 1. Persons born in 1924 will register September 7; 1926, September 8, 9; 1927, September 10, 11; 1928, September 13, 14; 1929, September 15, 16, and persons born in 1930 before September 19 must register September 17, 18. Boys bom on or about September 19, 1930, will Register on their eighteenth birthday, or within five days of it. Registration will take place in the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. General Hershey said Tuesday that men will be drafted by age groups under the new draft law, with 25 year olds the first to get the call. Calls then will be made down through the age groups until youths of 19 are reached.
