When samples of various baking powders were purchased from the grocers, and analyzed by the United States Government Chemists and the Chemists of State and City Boards of Health, the reports revealed the fact tl.at the Royal contained from 28 per cent, to 60 per cent, more leavening strength than the others, and also that it was more perfectly combined, absolutely pure, and altogether wholesome. As most of these powders are sold to consumers at the same price as the Royal, by the use of the Royal Baking Powder there is an average saving of over one third, besides the advantage of assured purity and wholcsomcness of food, and of bread, biscuit and cake made perfectly light, sweet, and palatable. The official reports also reveal the presence, in other powders, of alum, lime or sulphuric acid, by which their use is made a matter of grave (danger to the consumer. - Whenever a baking powder is sold at a lower price than the" Royal? or with a gift , it is a certain indication that it is made from alum , and is to be avoided under all circumstances . half-penni- ro-u- lt nuimn frnl, liNippf .1111 l,H IMlUIK iX d'vVki AdflAU mil I Jll J'l loVi! Doubtless thousands of young people, and not a small number of old ones, wish every day of thetr lives that they could learn the secret of fascinating others. by means of their r raceful, exquisite manners, says Jenness Hillers magazine. The secret Is an open one. It Is so easy to learn that It lies all neglected by tbe wayside, while others who would give their dearest treasure to find It, pass unknowing. It Is only this: Fill your heart with good will to everybody and then practice at all t lines tbe best manners you know.partlculnrly at home. If you begin at home this charming manner, will, so to speak, get settled on you an( never leave you. Be Just as polite to your sister as you would to your best girl. There Is tio place for practicing manners like the home circle; no place, permit one to say. where it will lie so appreciated. It will be a cultivation of heart, mind and body, this endeavor to feel nothing but affection for the people at home, and treat them as though they were worthy of as much consideration at your bands as If they were tho president and hi fumlly. So they are worthy. Then from the home will float out around you those sweet, magnetic influence which will draw tbe hearts of mankind toward you. I doubt whether any of these showed greater evldenoe of reasoning power than wag lately exhibited by a young elephant at Belle, the gardens In this city, says George Freeman, lu the My son for some weeks visited the gardens dally, sketching the animals, etc. Among these Is a young "baby" African ele-- 1 pbant, decidedly vicious In temper. There are also two or more elephants. Near their stalls are boxes containing bis-- 1 cults. When a penny Is given to one of the animals It puts the coin Into a slot, and as It falls It releases a biscuit, which the elephant tnkes with evident satisfaction. Some of the visitors, however, occasionally give the animals a and as experience has taught them that this coin Is of uo value for the purpose of obtaining biscuits, It Is generally thrown contemptuously back to the giver, One day, while my son was present, a visitor gave the "baby elephant a number of In succession, each of which was thrown at him again as soon as received. The visitor then gave the animal two at the same time. Ills demeanor Immediately changed. For more than five minutes he held tbe two coins In his trunk, rubbing them together and pow rocking from side to side and presently seemlug to be pondering deeply while perfectly still. At last he dropped the e In the box together, with the two result that their combi ned weight gave him the desired biscuit. The Joy of tho creature was almost ludicrous. Ills big ears were expanded, and he gamboled about In a manner which exhibited the most extravagant delight. It would seem that he had come to the con- elusion that the combined weight of the two coins would produce the desired result For, even yet I believe, that he has not learned to in reserve until he gets bold one another. There are already more clubs than n one can count in St Louis, most of them with and down-towhandsome buildings and well-fille- d treasuries, but, till lately, there was none that could be called a club of millionaires. This one is just being organized now. The members will not exoeed fifty, and their combined wealth will foot up over that number of millions. The principal object of the members of the club is to have some place down-tow- n where they can get a good luncheon in that interval between the morning and afternoon, which occurs somewhere about noon. So they call their club the Noonday Club. The fees and dues will be made so high that men who cannot bills as pocket treat hundred-dolla- r money will not bo inclined to enter. The St. Louis architects say that by next summer they will have machinery perfected that will keep offices as cool in the hot weather as the steam coils make them warm in the winter. The device is simply a radiator in the room, connected with the underground pipes of a company that is now making morey by pumping cold air through the streets to refrigerating establishments. The scheme u one that has been known to be practicable for a long time, but it has not been put into operation in any large city because no dealing in refrigeration company could get the right to lay pipes under the streets.
