Following the intermission, Park City played with much greater intensity on defense and seemed to get the tempo of the game on their side as they outscored the Trojans 18 to 14 during the third period. Coach Johnson went to his bench and gave the entire team an opportunity to play. Leading South Rich in scoring with another outstanding performance was Peart with 22. Tingey and Tate both scored 20, Buckley had nine, Krehl Brown had six and Wayne Winder netted four. South Rich was 28 for 37 from the foul line. For the Miners, they were led by Collins with 25. Matt Mapstone had 16, and Tatum came off the bench and scored eight. Park City was 14 for 19 from the foul line. One of the largest crowds of the year enjoyed what turned out to be an outstanding basketball game, especially for the home folks. By Larry Johnson Coach Ralph Johnsons South Rich Trojans Friday evening played host to first year coach Kent Critchlows Park City Miners in a game that the Trojans had to win in order to keep region playoff hopes alive. The Trojans scored an 18 point victory 82-6South Rich .took control of the ballgame as they raced to an eleven point first quarter lead on the strength of one of their best quarters of basketball this year. Leading the Trojans were Chad Peart, Darrin Tingey, and Gordon Tate. Tingey had an outstanding shooting performance from the perimeter as every shot he put up, went in, forcing the defenMiners into a sive situation in an effort to stop him. Coach Johnson retaliated by feet from pulling Tingey twenty-fiv- e the basket and turning the game into contest. This offensive a strategy all but took Park Citys outstanding guard, Kenny Collins, right out of the game. Coach Lamborn was extremely excited about the play of his eighth grade team, Our kids each week seem to understand their role and responsibility on the court much better. They tried to press us, but found little success as the kids were able to handle that kind of pressure with real good ball movement which resulted in a number of easy Coach Dale Lamborns seventh and eighth grade basketball teams traveled to Montpelier, Idaho to play against the Bear Lake Bears. His. seventh graders once again showed the effects of inexperience and lack oi'J size as they were soundly defeated in the opening game. As has been the tradition this turned the year, the 8th grade tables on the Bears as they pulled out a 20 point victory. The eighth grade was led in scoring by Robert Winder with ten, Butch Parker with baskets. The eighth grade record now moves to three and one on the year and the seventh grade drops to zero , Johnson Greg Thornock, who has returned to help Coach Ralph Johnson with this years basketball program, took his South Rich Junior Varsity against Park City in Randolph Friday evening. He had a happy homecoming as the young Trojans bounced the Miners 53-3- 9. It appeared early in the game that the local fans would be in for a good ballgame, but Coach Thornock and his troops had a different idea as they broke away from a 2 tie to outscore the Miners 29 to 4 and take a j 41 to 16 halftime lead, Leading the tremendous surge for the young Trojans was Wayne Winder, Dean Stuart, Brian Tingey and Troy Parker, who all finished the game in double figures. The third period found the tempo of the game slowed considerably, because Coach Thornock cleared his bench and the Miners outscored the Trojans 10 to 8, but still trailed by 23 at the end of the quarter. Again in the fourth quarter, the Miners kept the pressure on the Trojans and outscored them 13 to 4; but this only helped to make the score a little more respectable as for all intents and purposes, the game was over at halftime. South Rich was 7 for 17 from the line and led in scoring by Wayne Winder with 12, Dean Stuart with 11, and Brian Tingey and Troy Parker with 10 each. The Miners were 5 for 14 from the foul line and were led in scoring by McReynolds with 16, Vida with 8 and Bucker with 6. j Coach Roland Willis brought his North Rilch seventh and eighth grade basketball teams to Randolph January 17 to play Dale Lamborns South Rich Trojans. The Mustang seventh grade was led by Jeff Jex and Jamie Willis as they took total control of the contest and led 22-- 4 at half time. Coach Lamborns Trojans struggled as the larger Mustangs dominated on both ends of the floor. The second half found the Trojans led by Vernon Hatch playing equal with North Rich as both teams scored 21 points. Final score was North Rich seventh 42 - South Rich seventh 25. South Rich was three for seventeen from the line and led in scoring by Vernon Hatch with 18 points. The Mustangs were 9 to 24 from the line and led in scoring by Jeff Jex with 16 and Jamie Willis with nine. The eighth contest was a direct opposite to the first game as South Rich exploded to an 18-- 0 lead and 31 to 4 half time advantage. Butch Parker played a strong inside game leading S.R. with ten in the first half. Justin Hutchinson scored six and Robert Winder with five. Both coaches used all their players. Off the bench for S.R. Tony Jackson scored five, Vernon Hatch four, and a basket by Blake Weston. South - Rich won by a score of 50-2They were led in scoring by Butch Parker with 12, Robert Winder nine, Denee 6. Rex, Todd Stacey and Justin Hutchinson with six; and Tony Jackson with five. The Trojans were and line and led in scoring by Bret Early with eight and Jeff Jex with six. On the year, the eighth grade has defeated North Rich twice and Lost to Cokeville once. The seventh grade has a 0-- 3 record, having lost twice to North Rich and one to Cokeville. |
