took tra train lit and arrived IQ in time for the morning meeting there was a fair sized audience present and twenty elders sat eat upon tho stand As all the speaking was in dutch or nollan hollansky Hollan sk as they call it la that country the foreign for elita visitors could not understand much of what was being ald however I 1 found quite a similarity between the dutch and the danish which 1 an am acquainted with while one of the elders was speaking I 1 wrote down a list ot of 28 words which were the same ja a meaning aej dearly the same la in pronoun elation as those in the danish I 1 had an interesting visit with a family of dainis saints in I 1 gathered the children arouca me and had bad them tell me the names ot of the objects in the room and the terms they used la in school in a great many instances the tho words were either nearly like those in the danish or their common origin could easily be determined there thai are forty six elders la in the netherlands mission they are nearly dearly all young men their average ages being twenty four moutot of them are utah boys oil full ot of push and energy and are making splendid missionaries the firsti few days alter their arrival in holland one of them told ine me they practiced on the peculiar lutteral gutt gut cral teral sounds necessary lor for speaking the dutch language but aher after that was learned the language was not so hard the elders speak highly of the dutch and they have good reason to do so as they appear to be a bright intelligent class of people theio Is perfect religious freed freedom oui in holland and the gospel Is making rapid progress in rotterdam there Is a branch of 0 the church numbering about abour members including children with a well organ led sunday sobo school fl Tolu mutual improvement organization elcA choir of thirty members furnishes splendid ld singing la in the bargewell large larg ewell well faris furnished bed hall located la in a central part of the city on sunday sept 10 there were about present over halt of whom we were remen men at the tha arnhem conference I 1 had my birst experience la in speaking to an audience through gli an interpreter and it was not so difficult as I 1 had expected the trip from rotterdam to berlin berl in tales takes about twelve hours As soon as we leave the city we can see that the tha canals are higher than much ot of the land there are dykes in every direction to keep the water out these dykes are simply large binks banks of soil overgrown over grown with grass for a long distance near the coast the land is low and level ditches of still water intersected the country in every direction these serve as fences over which the grazing cows and sheep do not go farther laland inland there Is much sandy waste chete young forests are growl growing Dg towards the boundaries of of germany the land rises a little but most of the land as tar far as berlin la ia quite level everywhere there were men and women working in the fields usually more women women than men at the stations we were reminded that we we were re in the land of beer as there was usually a big outdoor out door fountain on every platform from which the attendant served the thirsty crowds or of tra traveler velem at the city of blenheim just over the boundary into germany the cu custom torn officers are located when the train stopped here all the passengers filed into a room with their hand baggi bagg iee dae where it was waa inspected germany Is a strictly protective country and I 1 suppose it 16 was to arc tet the annd german farmer that the official at blenheim ejk a small round from a woodus wo mius ba it and taxed the woman a certain sum which she paid this extreme enforcement af custom duty regulations is 19 amusingly illustrated la an incident told by one of the missionaries who having had bad a nice cake sent to him was taking it over the boundary toe the officials pounced upon it however and de landed the dutiable price themis the missionary did not like to pay so he be and hla his companion sit sat down within sight of the officers and ate the oake cake after which they went on their way into germany rejoicing the Tho evening brought us to berlin the lights of the city gleamed along the streets showing the long stretches of beautiful love five story buildings of which the city Is composed berlin
