Show nDODIP i r ' Nick Drake Sports Editor '' Tooele Cinder Squads Fall To Beeltdiggers On paper, it looked like Tooele would easily knock off visiting Jordan in a dual track meet the same in the discus with a heave of Wednesday. After all the Diggers had fallen to the likes of Murray and West, both teams of which dropped decisions to the Buffs. But everything isnt as it seems. In the mens Jordan captured nine of the 17 events to cruise back to Sandy with a victory under their belt. The Lady Diggers garnered II events in 16 as Jordan rolled to a victory in Tooele. Only two victories from Lisa Burgoyne and one each from Jeanne Whitehouse, Tina Henderson and the medley relay team kept the Beetdiggers from sweeping every first place finish. Burgoyne continues to run in top form with victories in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. The Tooele junior raced to a winning 5:43 in the 1600 while later cruising past the finish line with a winning 12:22 in the 78-6- 0 75-5- 5 3200. Whitehouse won the javelin with a toss of 108-- 8 while Henderson did f 1 106-2- . Max Walters keyed the Buffs with victories in the shot put and discus while Scott Benton, Jared Bunn, Jeff Smart and Brian Miller each added a first place effort for individual honors. Walters heaved the shot 44-1- 1 feet to win while the Buff senior tossed the discus 120-- 2 for another first place. Benton bested Saturdays state qualifying long jump with a winning jump of 212-- 0 while Bunn high jumped 6-- for another Buff first. Smart defeated a host of Digger opponents in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with a 42.61 while Miller won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12. Smart also captured a second in the 110 meter hurdles with a 17.37 while Miller did the same in the 1600 meter run with a 4:53. Bunn finished just behind Benton in the long jump 2 with a jump for 19-- 0 runner-u- p honors. Brendun Lawson took a silver finish in the 100 meter dash with a 12.02 and Greg Smith tossed a second in the javelin with a 148-0- . Terry Hancock (400), Kenneth Salahuddin (200), Gary Burgoyne (3200), Todd Johnson, Walters (javelin) and Kelly Hancock (pole vault) all finished third in their respective events. In the womens, Kim White raced to second place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times fo 14.34 and 29.41, respectively, to pace the Buffs. Laurie Staheli dashed to a second in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with a 58.96 while Nancy Cragun also finished with the same results in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:52. Shannon Fairbanks paced the Buffs in the high jump with a runner-up jump of Whitehouse also finished third in two events (discus and shot put) while Lori Lawson (100), Evelyn Walters (high jump and 1600), Tricia Fultz (400), Kelly Wood (800) and Staci England (javelin) also finished in third at their respective events. The Tooele tandem easily bested the second place team of Cricket Nelson and Nancy Marrott by a whopping eight strokes. Connie Frazer and Cheryl Roberts also shot a 88 to tie the Nelson-Marro- tt pair. In third flight action, Lorraine Pitt and Vona Vee Gibson, both of Tooele teamed to shoot a winning 87 in low gross to capture the crown by one stroke over the Virginia Ferguson and Celia Jensen duo. In the second flight low net, three Tooele tandems garnered 69 to take third place in the event and three strokes off the pace. Dolly McGeehan and Charlotte Jensen, Loma Davis and Thelma Butters and Jeannie Drinville and Gayle Yerke all paired for third place finishes.
