Tuesday night that all came to an end as the Lady Buffs opened their season at home and in high fashion. Despite a dismal team shooting performance, Lisa Peshell and Stad England sparked the Buffs to e victory over Lehi. Everything went according to 65-5- 3 plan for Ti IS Coach Susan Rydalch. "It was just the way I expected for both teams in their opener," Rydalch noted. "We didnt play real well but well enough to win and thats what counts. We have a lot of talent and can play a lot better than we showed Tuesday night. We have a lot of potential." Especially with Peshell and England on the floor. Peshell paced the Buffs with a sparkling 27 point performance while England added another 13 to the Tooele tally. Peshell also ripped down a game high 13 rebounds. What worries Rydalch is the Buffs shooting performance and lack of execution and patience on offense. "We didnt run the offense like we were supposed to, Rydalch said. We should have set it up and run some time off the clock when we had that lead but they wanted to run and gun. A team that is better than Lehi, just a little, would have beaten us. In fact, Lehi came out like in the first quarter to take a quick lead after one quarter. But a calm Tooele team pecked awy at gang-buste- the Pioneer lead and eventually took the lead for good midway through the second quarter. Tooele lead 36-3- 1 at halftime. Buffs stretched the lead to after the third frame end with e little more than 4 minutes remaining In the contest. But the pesky Pioneers made run at Tooele with six unanswered and points to cut the deficit to had a chance to overtake the Buffs until four consecutive trips down the floor resulted in turnovers. Although Tooele also failed to score time was running out on Lehi. With 57 seconds left, England iced the game with a steal, driving layup for two points and was fouled. She calmly sank the charity England toss and Tooele led then dished off an assist to Jeanne Whitehouse inside for an easy layup the next trip down the floor. Peshell added the finishing touches with two free throws with only eight ticks left. Rydalch was quite pleased with Whitehouses performance. "I think she did a real good job even though she didnt score a lot of The SI-4- 3 S8-4- 7 58-5- 61-5- points," Rydalch said. "This, really, is her first varsity game she has played in. Tina (Henderson) also played well in a reserve role. She gave what energy she had left after scoring 20 points in the JV game earlier. 1 just think we had the first game jitters, explained Rydalch, about Tooeles 32 percent field goal and 34 percent free throw shooting. "Their passes werent real crisp, there were a lot of turn- overs, shots werent quite as good, rebounds werent that great either. It looked like the first game of the season. It was just like I expected. Tooele will travel to Bingham to play the Miners Friday at 4 p.m. 336 N. MAIN, TOOELE 882-388- 0 CHECKER DAILY 2; 8:00-9:0- 0 AUTO PARTS SUN. 9:00-6:0- 0 f |
