I didn't want to be seen by peep on IM General Washington where I had been Meed on as a cabn bey. Before seeking out IM captain of IM Yellowstone Queen, I made inquiries of several of the men on shore to learn some details about renting slaves to river boat captains. I learned that the average rent on trips to the upper Missouri and back was one dollar a day. The estimated length of tM trip was 120 days. The stave got to keep the dollar earned on Sundays while the rest of the money went to the master. Generally half the fee was paid to the slave owner in advance of the trip, with the balance due upon return. If the slave did not return, the captain was obligated to pay the owner the fair market value of the slave. I was pleased to notice that a good portion of the Yellowstone Queen's cargo was still on the wharf, waiting to be loaded. Hopefully the captain would need Ikes services badly enough, so as not to inquire very thoroughly into our Nenl circumstances. ia:t - 1 . IM c fti-'- i rtrun i iiftft I- CTI Ik'S. hJ t. I divided our supplies into two bundles, one for me and one for Ike, and sold the mute to a man for thirty dollars. When I delivered Ikes bundle to him aboard the Yellowstone Queen, I gave him two twenty dollar gold pieces, half our money and probably more money than Ike had ever seen at one time in his entire life, and told him to sew the coins into his trouser pockets. We would need the money for horses when we arrived at Fort Benton, where the boats turned around and headed back home.
