TAKE 2 10:35 O O ENTERTAINMENT Tien wPPir 10:40 10:66 11:00 QUESTION: What is the difference between poison ivy and poison oak, if any, in terms of causing skin problems? ANSWER: Both poison ivy and poison oak have a three-leaf configuration the basis of the old saying, Leaves three, let it be." They are somewhat different, otherwise in appearance. Most im- portantly, how- ever, they both contain an oil that leads to the poison ivy" or poison oak syn- drome. (Poison oak is most common west of the Rocky Mountains and poison ivy is most common east of the. Rocky Mountains.) Therefore, they really should be regarded as the "same" in terms of their potential to cause the troublesome skin eruption characterized by redness, itching and blisters. According to a recent news article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (March 16, 1984) the number of people who are sensitive to these plants or to another member of this plant family, poison sumac is astounding. Half of the entire population of the United States is sensitive to these plants and if any of the sap from them touches their skin they will develop some kind of reaction. The article also states that another 35 percent of the population is less sen- sitive, meaning they may go for years without developing any reactions then all of a sudden develop reactions. This leaves only 15 percent of Americans who are totally unaffected by exposure to the sap from the poison ivy and sumac family. With so many people affected, it should come as no surprise that poison oak and ivy are the most common cause of work compensation payments in this country, affecting many kinds of outdoor workers. For example, 10 percent of all forest service employees are incapacitated by poison oak and ivy, and as many as 30 percent of firefighters battling outdoor blazes in the forest lands of this country are affected. The forest service has published a pamphlet, Preventing and Treating Poison Oak and Poison Ivy, that is available to the public from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It contains many good tips for both the prevention and early treatment of poison oak and ivy. QUESTION: Are the steroid creams available without prescription adequate for the treament of poison ivy? ANSWER: They may be helpful in very, very mild cases. However, for more involved cases, stronger steroid cream preparations, available only by prescription, are usually required. If the problem is very severe, only steroids taken by mouth and taken early will be very helpful. 1984 BY TRIBUNE COMPANY SYNDICATE, INC. 220 EAST 42ND STREET. Directed by Jonathon Demme. Screenplay by Rob Morton. Starring Goldie Hawn, Christine Lahti and Kurt Russell. December 7, 1941. A sneak attack on Pearl Harbor suddenly propels America into a war, sending men to battle and women to industry. As expressed so eloquently in Connie Fields excellent documentary, Rosie The Riveter, jobs once considered the exclusive domain of men were now being capably filled by women, spearheading their liberation in the workplace and creating an unprecedented cross-ethni- c cross-cultura- solidarity in l, the face of this most vital national endeavor. Swing Shift fails to weave this rich historical fabric into an equally en- grossing fictional narrative. The screenplay by Rob Morton, pseudonym for Nancy Dowd (Coming Home), lacks that enthusiastic challenging of one's limitations and glosses over the many hurdles of resentment, male-worke- r management opportunism, furious production demands, and the everpresent war itself. What remains is a failed valentine to romance and buddy-buddgood times on the home front of WWII. The bright colors and glossy studio look of the era merely heightens the tales artificiality while historical texture functions as little more than a flat backdrop. Heading a most appealing cast is Goldie Hawn as another sheltered sweetie-piwho predictably evolves t woman. She into a capable, becomes a star factory worker, capable of riveting together a dive bomber, fixing her own toaster, and having an affair with (Kurt Russell), an aspiring jazz trumpeter who's 4F due to a heart condition. There is genuine affection and devotion involved her but an overriding sense of emotional cay e self-relian- sualness trivializes the characters' actions. and Melvin director Jonathon Demme embraces his characters with a As in Handle With Care and Howard, lyrical, nonjudgemental generosity but, for the first time, he fails to evoke the beauty and nobility of his ordinary people coping with extraordinary circumstances. Swing Shift is charged with talent in direction, acting, and scripting making its ultimate failure all the more disappointing. |
