Show Reflections, May 3, 1984, Page 4 Museum Board Seeks Old Hidden Photos Gaude F. Atkin Members of the Tooele County Museum Committee have repeatedly requested persons to offer old photos of historical events, towns, people, cars, trains, or whatever, to the Museum on loan, or as gifts, or to be reproduced or enlarged, so we can show more fully the historical background of our county. Surely no other place in Utah has had such interesting historical events. However, these events have been for the most part ignored or forgotten. Can you people over 15 years of age have forgotten the sight of the hot molten slag being poured over the slag dump while driving at night along the lake shore past old Saltair and the old Kennecott Smelter? Or can anyone recall how the night sky lit up when the same process would be repeated several times a night at the old Tooele Smelter east of town? How many times have you stopped at by Main and Vine whiletheoldTooele Val- ley locomotive chugged past pulling cars of ore to the Smelter, and coming backdown loaded with ingots of copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver and other precious metals, destined for delivery the world? Your parents and all over grandparents were employed at that old railroad and smelter, and those old mines and mills, long before many of your were born. know that scores of people in our county were taking movies, and thousands of others had still cameras; and their finished photos are filled with recorded events of yesteryears. realize they are treasured reminders of your experiences as a family or a group; but among all these old photos and films are recorded events of historical significance that should be preserved by reproduction on video tape so the Museum can assemble all these important events in such a manner that our children and their children will be able to actually see and hear on video tape what life was really like back then." Perhaps you want to hand down all these pictures to your children. want to do the same; but some of these films should also be made available for all to enjoy. I recall shooting events of the daily operation of the smelter (or old Smokey), the dumping of hot slag over the dump at night at close range, pictures of some of the men at work, some of the old trains of the Tooele Valley Railroad, the last run through town, the tearing down of the old Tooele High School and gym, the demolition of the old North Ward Church, and the old Tooele South Ward Chapel and stake house. also have pictures of the tearing down of the old Tooele County Courthouse, the fire in the old Oquirrh Hotel, I I I I splicing and reproducing all available material. The committee right now is reaching out for someone, anyone, who is interested enough to volunteer their help Dear J.K.C.: I'm in favor of escape. Lord knows, we all need a respite from the daily pressures. But I would derive little pleasure from seeing the Von Erick brothers crush the Freebirds, and the thought of one human being pulverizing another leaves me cold. The key, I believe, is my feeling about violence. I find it frightening, not entertaining.
