Supported by strong poles, it became a pleasant veranda for visiting or resting. It has been gone for years, banished by old age and city regulations. The Halladays plan to t erect a replica in the form of a canopy which will give the illusion of a balcony. The big problem said Patti is with the old brick. It is of soft composition and will have to be cleaned by hydroblasting or a water bath. four-foo- The soda fountain originally came from the Tooele Drug which stood on the northeast corner of Main and Vine and was brought to Grantsville in 1953 by Jim and lola Dugdale who owned the business before Bob. Since its gas mechanism failed two months ago, it has been a soda fountain in name only, Bob pointed out. Soda pop has had to be dispensed in cans. Somehow this makes no difference to the regulars. They come in every day anyway. think it is because Bob can relate to anybody," Patti said. "There is never a time that he isnt reading, and his interests are so varied that he can discuss almost any subject thoroughly with the people who come in here. Customers are often surprised to find that he is so knowledgeable in their fields. I - People come to Bob with many problems everything from personal troubles to things like broken watches or glasses, she said. A man with so many interests must also have hobbies. Bobs main escape from the confining hours of the pharmacy is fishing. It is a three generation matter with Sterl, Bobs father, and his son, Larry, joining in. For years Bob indulged his hobby of photography by "shooting the townspeople who visited the store. Now he has a gallery of memorable photographs along with a valuable collection of photos of early settlers and buildings of this small community. It is sort of a gigantic town yearbook. Along with other skills, he is also a gourmet cook specializing in fish, sea food and sauces. "I lost my interest in antiques when became one, I he quipped. Being greeted by a Halladay behind the counter is a tradition for Grantsville folks. The Bluebird, a confectionary run by his parents, Sterl and Sue Halladay, has its own spot as a gathering place in the hearts of many a Grantsville native. But although Bob seems to have inher- ited much of his frank and open, practical and humorous attitude from them, his interest in pharmacy was not kindled until his second year at the University of Utah when he met the dean of the college of pharmacy. A good background in math, science and chemistry at Grantsville High and his good grades r earned him a scholarship. "The hours are long, Bob said. You have to love this job to stay in it. It is so confining." Grantsville folks are grateful that he loves his work. In the 25 years that Bob has been in the old Johnson Hall, he has become an institution, a legend, a tradition - he and the folks who regularly find a special spot at the old soda fountain. "Special" seems to be the word for it. I come here to visit," said regular You find a special class Sutton. Myron of people here. We're a good class of people," he emphasized. Regular Joy Walton agreed. "Ive been coming here ever since I was a teenager and came here (from Ibapah) to go to school. Theres a lot of love that comes out of this place," she added, "and I have to come here each day to four-yea- feel it." But perhaps a couple of tourists from Switzerland said it best. Dropping in at Bobs for a minute, they were caught up in the spell of its charm and stayed three hours. On their return to Switzerland, they sent a card. It was addressed to DRUG CO.
