Roberts Sports Editor Grantsville Captures Region Nine Crown Just as certain as the drought has ended in Utah the drought suddenly came to an abrupt halt for the TX Grantsville High School track team. The Pokes captured 16 second and third place finishes in Region Nine track action Wednesday to win its first track title in 20 - v1: 1 ' years. Cowboy depth prevailed. The thinclads finished first place only twice during the meet for 20 points but added 112 points for second and third place finishes. Grantsville amassed 151 points, 25 better than Unions 126 and nearly double the point totals of the rest of the Region Nine contingent. n ! p ti ' ' ' - 1 tli V? S, Emery scored 86, Wasatch 62, Intermountain 50 and Morgan 30. It was a joyous day for track coach Dale Mohler who collected his first region trophy as head mentor of Grantsville track team. The Cowboys qualified for 18 spots in state competition. Grantsvilles two firsts came in the shot put and the 400-met- relay. Fred Hall powered the lead ball 42 feet 8 inches, one inch better than the second place man from Union. Jeff Bracken, Paul Cook, Darrin Cook and Kevin Orgill sped around the Tooele rubber track to finish first in the 400 meter relay. Grantsville chalked up 64 points from second place finishes. David Francom in the high jump and javelin, Lance Gurney in the long jump, Bruce Gilbert in the 400 meter dash, Kevin Orgill in the 400 meter hurdles, and Paul Cook in the 200 meter dash. In girls competition Grantsville tied for fourth with Union. Wasatch finished first, Emery second and Morgan third. Intermountain Inter-mountai- the 17 events. Other top finishes included Tina Barrus, fourth, in the 100 meter hurdles; Karen Bell in the 400 meter dash; and Jill Anderson fourth in the 800 meter run and fifth in the 3200 meters. "This will be a great opportunity for me to get acquainted with more of the members, said new golf pro Jerry Braun.
