Mike, along with all 1 1 other members of the Buff squad, earned palces in the state meet which will be held Feb. Tooeles great heavyweight wrestler, Mike Warr definitely has the upper hand in this photo, Just as he did in his championship match with Dave Helm of Murray. Mike won the region heavyweight championship defeat on the Murray grappler. Mike had a bye by administering an RfrsM Tooeles brilliant Alan Hanson came within a few seconds of winning the Region championship as is attested by this photo. Hansen had Preston Evans of West in this cradle lock and was about to earn three points when the clock ran out and Evans won the match 9-- 7. TS Buff Grapplers Finish 2nd In Region The Region Six wrestling cham- pionships were conducted Wednesday at West High School and for Tooele it was, two - three - three - three - three - twelve. Interpreted that breaks down to a second place finish in the team -- championships, three region champions, three seconds, three thirds, three fourths and all twelve members of the Buff squad qualifying to compete at the state championships. Ats'AMyBoy The smile-wreathe- d face of David Crawford reflects the Joy of winning a Region championship as he receives congratulations from his coach Paul Dart A sophomore, won the Region Crawford championship making it his second Region title in a row. crown Crawford won the last year. 105-pou- West won the championship with 1884 points, with the Buffs second with 1564 points, Murray third, 1384 points, followed by Jordan, South and Judge. Capturing Region titles for the Buffs were David Crawford, Matt Kirigin, and heavyweight Mike Warr. West won the championship by having a clear superiority over Tooele in matches where the Panther and the Buffalo met In these encountrers, West came out on top seven of the r; 185-poun- head-to-hea- THE BEST BASKETBALL IN THE WORLD COMES TO UTAH 30 TIMES A YEAR d. ten matches. Tooele was also hurt in the first round when Tooeles opponents from Murray and Judge Memorial were scratched at the last moment giving the Tooele wrestlers a first round bye. Tooele had eight byes in the first round, while Wests best wrestlers were picking up added points by easily defeating first round opponents. The byes deprived Tooele the opportunity of picking up valuable points in the first round by pinning or gaining superior decisions over weaker opponents. "Those first round byes put us squarely behind the eight ball, exclaimed coach Paul Dart. "Boy, eight first round byes are pure murder, exclaimed assistant coach Richard Valdez. "It makes it hard to get away to a good start, was assistant coach Dennis Workmans assessment of Tooeles slow start No excuses, just an explanation of the situation. Region Champs Hie best of the Buffs were Da- vid Crawford, Matt Kirigin and Mike Warr, all earning region crowns during the meet. David Crawford, Tooeles human buzz saw came up with his second region championship when he won his division with a brilliant decision over Greg Tanner of Murray. Twice, earlier in the year, Tanner had defeated the Tooele terror, but in the championship bout it was Crawford a winner over 105-poun- 13-- 9 four-poi- Tanner. Only a sophomore, Crawford won the region championship as a freshman a year ago. In earning his second title, Crawford got a bye the first round, pinned Tim Duran of South in his first match, and then earned his gold medal with his win over Tanner. Matt Tooeles Kirigin, dynamo has been improving by leaps and bounds and is just now reaching his peak. That was proven in the Region championships, when Kirigin carved out a close win over Daren Grant of West. Coming into the match Grant was the distinct favorite, but ran into Kirigin at his best and Grant became an upset victim. Kirigin had a bye in the first round, then defeated Mark Buehler of Murray before gaining the championship over Grant. Warr On the Warpath Mike Warr left no doubt in anyone's mind that he is the reigning king of the heavyweights in Region Six as he battled his way to the championship of the behemoth wrestlers. The huge Samoan, Fred Solovl of West won his first match with a quick first fall pin over his first opponent, while Mike was getting d pressive 5-- 2 win over Solovi. In the championship bout, it was clearly Warr the aggressor over and eventual winner, Murrays capable Dave Helm. The tough luck award of the meet would have to go to Tooeles 8-- Alan Hansen and Troy Griffith. Hansen fell far behind Wests Preston Evans in the first two periods and was trailing badly when they faced each other in the third and final period. Coming on strong, Hanson and quickly closed the gap to in the final seconds maneuvered cradle lock. Evans into a near-fatBut before Hanson could get Evans shoulders close enough to the mat to earn near-fal- l points, time ran out and Evans won, regulating Hanson to second 9-- 7 9-- place. Griffith and Murrays Jess Gomez were battling for third and fourth places and the confrontation was a thing of beauty. After three periods the score stood at 5-- 5 requiring three, one-minu- te overtime periods. During regulation time, Griffith had been penalized two very ques-tionnab- points by the referee that had earned Gomez the tie. And darned if it didnt happen again in the overtime. Gomez was awarded two points by the referee, good enough to earn the overtime Murray grappler the It didnt take Dart long to establish himself as a bonafide entry in the state meet when he demolished Fred Raso of Judge Memorial 17-- 2 in his first match. In his second match Dart was pinned by Clark Edwinson of Jordan, but Dart took Edwinson into the third round before going down and Edwinson went on to win the chamclass. pionship in the Dart then proved his mettle by defeating Matt Bouldin of West after receiving a bye in the third round to finish third in the 126-poun- d 7-- region. It was sweet revenge for Dart who had been pinned by Boulden earlier in the year. Championship Round moved Greg Smith, into the championship round and then lost a 1 decision to Jim Lopez in the finals. After battling to a 5 tie in regulation time, Lopez earned the narrow decision in the 2-- 5-- overtime regulating Smith to se- cond place. Dev Brown also moved into the championship round before being pinned by Troy Ells of West in the championship round to earn se- cond place. Tooeles three, third place fin- ishers were Fernando Flores, Mar-ka- y Brown and Dart, and earning fourth places were Russ Stead- man, Troy Griffith and Steve Dart Surprises Wyatt.
