No one can give a winning performance or live a vigorous life unless they are in prime mental and physical condition. And, nutrition plays a vital role in overall health and Unfortunately, nutrition is often , misunderstood. This sampling of nutritional myths with their truthful counterparts should help set the record straight: Myth No. 1: Using fad diets is a good way to lose weight quickly. Reality: Many athletes have to constantly watch their weight to maintain a level at which they feel " best for competition. While fad diets are tempting and promise a quick cure, they are not the answer. A simple approach to losing weight is to cut down on the amount of food eaten, especially foods high in fat or sugar. Research has shown that slow eating foods - like soup help to reduce overall caloric intake. Soups are relatively low in calories and are dense in many nutrients on a per calorie basis, offering the best of both worlds - fewer calories and well-bein- ALLENS DRIVE-I- N Daren Sagers and Dave Haag were nominated to receive their Vigil Honor In the Order of the Arrow at the summer fellowship June 17 and 18 at the East Fork of the Bear. Each year the lodge is able to honor one Vigil member for every fifty members on Its roll. At the end of the year, Vigil membership is conferred on those arrowmen who have demonstrated unusual contribu-tion- s to the lodge or to scouting over a period of years since Joining as ordeal members. A wide variety of foods eaten in the proper quantities is essential for a top performance. Re- member the basic four products, cereals and grains, meats and le- gumes. Myth No. 3: Sugary foods like candies and sweets are quick energy boosters. Reality: No food will give instant energy. Energy in performance depends on training and overall good nutrition. While athletes or dont normally require any special food or diets, there are some positive steps you can take to improve your performance: Eat a nutritious, balanced diet every day to maintain good overall health. Watch your caloric intake to maintain a weight that is best for you. Eat wisely. Most meals should be light and not high in fiber, fat or sugar. Psychology or how you feel about a food is important.
