Other athletes, possessing a certain amount of athletic ability, are willing to pay the price to achieve success, and at great personal sacrifice, set goals, practice, work and practice some more in order to develop that natural talent. Tooeles Terry Griffith fits into the latter mold. Terry had natural ability his father and his two older brothers were exceptional athletes in the world of football, baseball, golf and basketball, and his mother is a far better than average golfer. Terrys natural ability although still undeveloped came to him naturall- 17, 1983 yA year ago Griffith realized what it would take to develop his talent and he began to work as few athletes have ever worked. At the end of the year Terry ranked as the sixth best diver in Utah. This year Griffith established a goal to become the state champion diver and then set Terry Griffith the Tooele diving lamp of tradition, set earlier by Rex Griffiths and Scott Nelson, by winning the 1983 state diving championship. Terry not only defeated the finest divers from throughout the state, he demolished them; winning his title by nearly 100 an overwhelming ma points jority in the close and competi five world of diving. Countless hours of practice, competing in dual meets, experiencing a loss here and there and then back to the diving board for more torture-fillehours of practice. It wasnt easy. But Terry stuck with it and all those hours of practice, the critical comments of his coach, the disappointing losses in dual meets, and the burning desire to succeed, blended into the t '. d Ball Eludes Dugway John DeWitt, Dugway forward, makes fruitless grab for a loose ball In the Dugway-Parowa- n game while Mike Millett (34) begins his chase for the loose casaba. . the BYU Marriot Center. The Mustangs couldnt hit from outside that is true, but it was their inability to hit from in close that killed them. Time after time close in bank shots missed and sometimes two, three and four successive efforts eventually fell into the clutching grasp of the battling Rams. Normal sure handed Dugway players consistently fumbled passes, failed to pick up loose balls and many rebounds were bobbled as though they had their fists doubled up or were trying to catch the ball with their elbows. And in their frustration Dugway committed foul after foul. Paro- wan was ever grateful and piled up 19 points while Dugway had to stand helplessly at the foul boundaries and watch the Ram points pile up. The Rams scored 21 points in the final period and 17 of them came from the foul line. Every one of those freebies hurt. After trailing by as many as nine points in the fourth period the proud champs battled back and narrowed the gap to when the Parowan parade to the foul line began. Alan Burton and Mike Robinson stretched Parowans lead to 52-4- 6 with 3 for 4 from the foul line. Then with 236 remaining Larry White put Dugway in a threatening position with a drive and basket as Dugway trailed Travis Griffiths hit 4x4 from the foul stripe stretching the Ram lead to Steve Bruce, who had a miserable shooting first half found the range and hit from outside the foul circle and Dugway was still threatening at Then Parowan closed it out with more foul shots. In the final four minutes of the game, Parowan broke away from a all lead to score 14 points from the foul line. Dugway went down hard, battling its frustration with everything they had, but nothing went right. Example, the Mustangs could only hit on 7 for 25 while shooting unmolested from the foul line and it is doubtful that the Mustang shooting from the field was much better. About the only time the ball would drop for Dugway was into the hands of the scrappy Rams. The game was tied seven times, the last time at early in the second period. Then Mike Robinson drove the baseline for a fielder and turned it into a play putting Parowan in front and Dugway could never get in front again. Team leader Steve Bruce couldnt find the hoop in the first half but this brilliant battler came back strong in the second half to end his evenings work with 20 points, plus several assists. Larry White also had a fine game, battling furiously on the boards, and getting most of his 18 points by muscling his way under the 52-48- I ., 56-4- 58-5- 3. 49-4- 6 30-2- 7 TOOELE BODY & PAINT 163 So.
