CO.CHRANE fllPAI High Blood Pressure Facts & People who have high blood pressure, about one in every seven Americans, oftenhave questions about their disease, and they should talk to their physicians or health departments to get specific answers. Q. I feel o.k. and my blood pressure reading is normal again because Im taking pills the doctor prescribed. Have I been cured? A. No! Most high blood pressure can be controlled but not cured. If you stop the pills you blood pressure will most likely go up again. Take your medication every day. Keep your blood pressure down and under control. Q. What about smoking and high blood pressure? A. Dont smoke, if possible. Smoking makes the heart beat faster, raises your blood pressure, upsets the flow of blood and air in the lungs, and damages the lining of the lungs. The constant strain that smoking, high fat diet, and high blood pressure place on the heart adds up and is deadly. Following are some ways to begin "kicking the habit: a. Choose a cigarette with less tar and nicotine. b. Smoke only the first half of the cigarette. c. Reduce the number of times a puff is taken on the s v'Ve-- s q 4 Pan CINNAMON ROLLS $1 cigarette. Find a safe substitute for handling cigarettes like a lucky coin, pen or pencil. Q. What about alcohol and high blood pressure? A. Drinking alcohol is a risk with high blood pressure. Although the first drink may lower the blood pressure a little, it will rise with more alcohol. Heavy weekend drinking can be a real problem. Large amounts of alcohol, especially over a short period of time, in an individual with high blood pressure places a tremendous strain on the heart and circulation. In addition, alcohol and high blood pressure medications can be a dangerous combination. So take your medicine daily and limit ytrnr drinking. Try the following suggestions: a. Drink beer. b. Limit the number and kind of drinks. In other words, have fewer drinks and avoid strong liquors. c. Buy smaller amounts. d. Drink other beverages like coffee, soda, milk, tea or fruit juice. Q. Can exercise affect high blood pressure? A. Everyone needs some type of exercise daily. If you have hypertension or other health problems, ask your doctors advise before starting an exercise program. A slowly advanced or approach to exercising is usually advised. An example may be to start walking two blocks a day and slowly add on more blocks and speed until you are jogging a mile a day, but this depends on your doctors orders. Generally speaking, exercises like running, walking, swimming or bicycling lower your blood pressure and are very good. Q. What about stress and high blood pressure? A. Stress is any situation that creates an uncomfortable feeling, tension, or strain in the person. Each person sees and handles stress differently. Stressful situations usually mean a change or adjustment. Stressful situations may be positive or negative (good or bad) like marriage, birth of a child, new job, or death of a loved one. In these situations or even when hungry or rushing to work, the blood pressure rises and the heart beats faster for a short time, but your blood pressure will rise even higher. Your brain, heart and kidneys need to be protected against that. The following advise may help you handle the stress differently. a. Look at the problem or stressful situation. Recognize your limits and that you are human. b. What are your responses to the stress? Are they in your best personal and health interests? - c. Adapt to the stressful problem by thinking about and acting on alternatives to solutions, d. Learn to relax. Blood pressure clinics will be held at Dugway on May 20th, Wendover on May 21st and 22nd, and at Grantsville m May 23rd. 29 '' ' , v o '' Little Judy was curious about her father working at the office during the evenings.
