Colonel Rurlmlet goal of making TAD the numlier one depi4 in the country's de4 system is part of a greater goal, that of keeping Americas defense system secure. Meeting the Colonel for the first time, the old fashioned phrase" an officer and a gentleman comes to mind an apt description of this reserved commander with a distinct army liearing and a vast knowledge of de4 ojxratiom, a man obviously dedicated to his task. THIS DEDICATION permeates existence, hut r4 only his also that of his family, which consists of wife, Jackie; sons Kirk, 25. a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Forte; Kevin, 23, student in engineering at Texas A. fic M.; and Donna, 19, studying speech pathology at the University any other large industrial installation. We represent a cross section of common weaknesses as does any business from a department store to a city government. The vast bulk of employees are hard working and industrious, he claimed. COLONEL BURBULES mentioned a Trot line" direct to his ofTice which allows anyone on the depot to call in anonymously and give information they feel the commander ought to be aware of. The hat line has top priority, he said. Its slight use indicates that things are going well. Problems have been blown out of proportion, he said. The commander also has an "open door policy. Anyone with a problem, either personal or professional, can come in any time, day or night. However, he said problems should be solved on the lowest level possible. Then, if an individual does not get satisfaction, he can bring the problem to the commanders office. Whenever this method has been used, he said, the individual has gotten an answer. He said it may not have been the answer he wanted to hear, but in most cases the individual has been pleased with the decision or has gone away with a greater understanding of the problem, satisfied with the situation. ACCORDING TO the commander, in an installation of 3,900 people, only one percent are dissatisfied. Thats approximately 39 people, he said. Facts have been purposely distorted or published without proper research. Look at it the other way. Ninety-nin- e percent are working hard, doing a job they can be proud of. r day-to-da- y of Utah. The Burbules family enjoys skiing and both the Colonel and Mrs. Burbules expressed delight with the local facilities. Utahs fantastic ski areas are one of the nations better kept secrets, the Colonel said. They also get in some fishing when possible. IN ADDITION to skiing and tennis, Mrs. Burbules said she particularly enjoys her activities in the TAD Wives Club. She said that Tooele has become one of her favorite places. I have enjoyed Tooele and also the beautiful state of Utah. She added that people in Tooele have been very friendly. I cant thank them enough for letting me be a part of the life here. MOVING AROUND has had its advantages for her children she said. They have been able to participate in diversified activities such as scuba diving and sailing, she said. Lack of roots could be termed a disadvantage, she said. Every place you go, you have to make a new home. Its hard on young people knowing they have to make new friends in a new community and wondering if they will be accepted. Mrs. Burbules said her children have been able to take it all in stride. We had very little problem with them. Even now that they are grown they like to come home, which tells me they enjoyed their home, she said. COMMANDER Burbules and Mrs. Burbules came to Tooele Army Depot in 1977. His assignments included duty in both the Korean and Viet Nam Wars for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint and Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. For Colonel Burbules the aforementioned hobbies and sports take a distant second seat to his duties at the depot. Not only is TAD the parent depot of a complex of installations in n five states, it is a depot in and of itself. multi-missio- 4 In addition to a big supply mission which includes handling many different classes of supplies from automotive parts to ammunition and chemicals, it has an $80,000,000 maintanance mission. The Colonel said the depot has the unique mission of Chemical Agent hair. Munitions Disposal System (CAMDS) with its $50,000,000 plant in the de- pots south area. SPEAKING BRIEFLY of the depots controversial role in disposal he said that much of what Ammunition does right now is pointed toward developing new ecologically clean methods of disposal of both conventional and chemical ammunition. The Colonel pointed out the critical role played by the depot in worldwide national defense. The depot is a subordinate element of the Depot Systems Command with headquarters in It in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. of the U.S. Army turn is a Development and Readiness Command which he said means just that - to take care of all equipment and supplies that have been developed and procured with a part in the research and production of new items of equipment and supplies which serve to modernize our defense forces. THE COLONEL termed the depot a cradle to the grave operation, responsible for the research, development, procurement, production, storage, distribution, maintainance, and finally the disposal of obsolete or worn out supplies and equipment. He stressed the vital part played by TAD in the total world-wid- e support of all the armed services. U.S. Army Material Development and Readiness Command (DARCOM) is the single manager for ammo for all three services. We at TAD are proud to be part of that team. We feel that our many missions unique only to the Tooele Army Depot contribute importantly to the defense of the nation. Since last week, people have been giving me all sorts of examples of what lack of communication can do to the course of true love. It made me stop and think. You know, I never really realized what the male contingent has to go through in dealing with conniving womankind. The following conversation which ensued between my husband and me is a good example. It all began with a perfectly innocent remark I made asking for his opinion on what to do about the perpetual ungovernable state of my DO YOU THINK I should have my hair dyed? I said to him as he sat reading the paper. Humph! was all that came from behind the evening news. I repeated my question. Listen, he said with a fierceness that took me somewhat aback, Youre not going to drag me into this. If I say yes than youre going to say, Why didnt you tell me I looked so terrible? and if I say W youre going to burst into tears and say, You just dont care how I look. You dont love me anymore. nt I HAD BEEN about to burst into tars, but thought I had better wait a bit. We men just cant win where you women are concerned, he said. Im sure I dont know what you mean, I said innocently, but I had a growing suspicion I was in for it ... I was right. WHAT HAPPENED when we passed that curvacious brunette on State Street the last time we were in Salt Lake? Im sure I dont remember, I said drawing myself up coldly. Well, I do. You asked me if I didnt think she was gorgeous and when I said wow! you kicked me in the shins right there on State Street. Col. and Mrs. Burbules relax at their home at TAD. The Turkish pistola held by Col. Burbules is thought to be approximately 200 years old. WELL, WHAT do you expect? I murmured, not knowing what else to say. Yes, but then when that beau- tiful blonde dropped her handkerchief by my chair in JBs, I manfully declared I didnt notice her legs when I picked it up, You hit me over the head with your purse and called me a liar. I said under my Coward, breath. he said FURTHERMORE, picking up steam, I dare you to admit what happened the year you insisted I wasnt to get you a Christmas present, so I didnt. I began. Well, You cried all day and wouldnt let me have any turkey for dinner. YOU SHOULD have known better, I said. Oh, yeah! You told me to forget your birthday, too, and when I got you a gift anyway, you got all upset, cried, and said we couldnt afford it. I couldnt think of anything to say, so I tried to squeeze out a few tears, but they just wouldnt come. YOU DIDNT speak to me for a week the time you asked for my honest opinion on how you looked in that new dress. I told you it did make you look a little chubby. He threw down the paper, arose and I... began to pace up and down. I didnt dare move a muscle. But, he said, Hie crowning event was the homecoming dance at the old high school. NOW THAT was really terrible. . . I began hotly. He went on. You got sick, but you INSISTED that I stay and dance with all the old girl friends as you put it. So I did. When I got home, I found the door locked and my clothes all packed and on the front porch. What do you have to say about that? He shook a demanding fist in my face. What did I say? I said and did the only thing a woman can do under the circumstances I burst into tears. You dont love me anymore! I cried. |
