Show The Tooele Transcript, Friday, November 21, 1975 Tooele County Extension Office Ext. Horticulturist Melvin S. by Ituminghum, I'Sl' W hat Bring On Fall Colors? The spectacular leauty of fall colors that we are witnessing is generally credited to J.uk Frost. Yet Jaik Frost isn't due the credit. If frifct we re the only factor involved, the leaves would turn brown, dry up, and drop off. Fat tors that bring those brilliant scarlet yellows and red contrasting colors is due to the shortening of daylight, moisture, temperature, sunlight intensity, and the vaiietv of plants. The most brilliant colors appear after a warm dry summer followed by early fall rams. Iaite fall rams produce drab coloration, whereas drv weather increases the inuniifat lure of sugars which produce the dull red colors. Ax you see the red apjiearing on the hillsides you can be assured that it is the leaf color change of oak, maple, poison ivy, or a mini-Ih- t of other trees or shrubs. The yellow may be cottonwood or quaking asxns, etc. In the home yard the most spectacular red apjsears on the Winged Fiionvinus or the Virginia Creeper vines. The yellow may be the ash, maple, locust. Golden bain, or many other trees or shrubs So von see. dcjx'iidmg on the season, the weather or the species of trees determines the fall color and the brilliance. Among the more popular spring flower bulbs are crocus, or narcussns, hyacinths and tulips. Some use allium or snowand there may he others. With the drops, iris, choice of the alxive spring flowering bulbs, you can arrange almost any color combinations you want. It is important that you get and plant the spring flowering bullis now while the nursery supply is gixxl because the bulbs develop their root system while the ground is cool and before it freez.es up. This is important if you expect large flowers next You should have spring. Of course, this isnt the only choice bullis, a well prepared bed, and the Imllis planted at the rigid depth. daf-fcxhl- Book Review by Barbara Jean Vaughn "The future of the American Presidency under Gerald Ford is apt to lie influenced by his intriguing choice of heroes - a trio of former Presidents each having roots in the American heartland, each with a healthy suspicion of bureaucracy. One is Dwight D. Eisenhower, because he was considered a peoples president, eschewed politics and preferred cooperation with Congress. Another is Alirahain Lincoln, because he saved the Union, dealt gently with people and was unafraid to face tough questions. The third is Democrat Harry Truman, who was direct, knew where the buck stopped, and was not scared by the heat of the kitchen. Gerald Ford and the Future of the Presidency" by J. F. takes as from Jerrys childhood, through the War and into the precincts of Michigan. Here, Ford joins the Home to Tieat the machine.
