Club Advisor Willard Atkin said, Our team looked very good. We were right up there with the most etperienc- ed tthoult in the state. 1 think. for our first state meet, we made a good showing." Tooele eight man team competed with 120 player from in the eight different school unrated division. Virwinont placed first in the division with 20 point. Tooele with 16 points was hot on the heels of second place Woods Cross with 17 points. Alyce Tooele Girls Win Region Championship The Tooele high school boys swimming team, and the Swimming Teams Sponsors organization must have been a confident group Wednesday night and earlv Thursday morning. Members of these teams constructed hundreds of signs under- the general theme of Tooele Take and they personally Region visited each member of the girls swimming teams house in the dark hours of the night; pasted these signs on the houses, and liberally decorated the shrubs and trees with rolls and rolls of toilet tissue. It was their way of wishing the girls swim team success Thursday in the Region Five swimming and diving champion- ships. THE GAL paddlers came through in championship style for their boosters as they easily defeated Judge Memorial and Jordan Thursday in the Tooele pool. Final score, despite the fact that Tooeles freestyle relay team was disqualified, was Tooele 452. Judge 220 and Jordan 198. Tooeles team, coached bv Mel Roberts, who received the the usual dunking following final event, and captained bv Lori Painter and Cindv Reid, never trailed, and with each passing event ttie score mounted in Tooeles favor as the ten first Buffette's captured with Jordan places, winning three firsts and Judge one. In the course of the meet eight new Region records were set, and in two events the winning times were lower than existing State records. THE TOOELE team qualified 15 swimmers for the State meet which will be held April 20 at the U of U, and they should be a definite threat for the State championship. Towle set the pace of the meet in the opening event when the 200 yard medley relay team of Taunna Richardson, Stacy Painter, Sue Kluever and Cindy Reid splashed to victory in the record time of 2:23 0 which was 5 seconds better than the state record. In the 200 yard Freestyle, Tooele captured the first four Iori places with Painter winning, followed Roberts, Betsy Culbertson and Janae Harris. TAMMI JENSEN won her second first place when she captured the 200 yard Individual Medley, with Pat Anderson finishing third. Taunna Richardson, became champion of Region 5 in the 50 yard backstroke as she won the event in record breaking time of flat. seconds Cindv Reid was second and Ann Koffel was fourth. Sharon Palmer, Stacy Painter, Sharron Bennion and Liz Peck finished in the 50 37 in breaststroke, with Palmer winning the event in the time of 42.2 and setting a new record V in the process. Bennion and Peck tied for third and fourth behind Stacy Painter who finished second. THE 50 FREE was won bv the sensational Susan Kluever who set a new record of 29.4, making it two firsts and two records for Miss Kluever.' Tooele was shut out in the 50 yard butterfly, but Cindv Reid won the diva fine exhibition and with ing scoring 2(X).B0 points even though she failed her final dive and received no points. The 1(X) yard freestyle was won bv Jan Dickerson of Jordan, with Lori Painter and Kavce Jones finishing second and third. set her third KLUEVER record in the 4(X) yard freestyle winning in the time of 5:31.4. A real battle for second place developed between Andrea Roberts of Tooele and Bobbie Gatehouse of Jordan, with Gatehouse capturing second place just three tenths of a second ahead of Roberts. Taunna Richardson won her Division third championship when she won the 100 back in the time of 1:22.5 with Tammi Jensen and Ann Koffel finishing second and third. Freshman Liz Peck, in a driving finish, won the 100 yard breaststroke in the time of 1:32.5 and set a new Region Miss record in the process. Peck narrowly edged Stacy Painter by the mere margin of two tenths of a second. It was a fine win for freshman Peck. TOOELES freestyle relay team finished second to Jordan, but was disqualified which put Judge in second place. Tooele failed to win the 50 butterfly, which was won by Karen Gatehouse of Jordan in the, record breaking time of 43-Tooele had no entries in either the 50 fly or the 100 fly. In the 100 fly, Debbie James of Judge, the only swimmer, won the event in 1:58.6. And Jordans team of Bobbie Gatehouse, Joan and Patty Morten-so- n and Jan Dickerson won the 4(XJ yard freestyle. the free; Richardson, the relay, and the 50 back; Palmer in the 50 breaststroke; and Peck in the 1(XI breaststroke. Other record breakers were Karen Gatehouse, Jordan in the 50 butterfly, and Jordans 4(X) yard freestyle relay team of J. and P. Mortensen, Gatehouse and Dickerson. Outstanding swimmer of the meet was Susan Kluever, with three firsts, three new records and scoring 40 points. Closely following Kluever was Taunna Richardson who won three firsts, set two records and also scoring 40 points. Other high point makers for the victorious were Reid with 38, Stacy Painter, 36, Jensen and Lori Painter with 30, Palmer with 29, Peck with 29 and Roberts with 28. The swimming team was ready for this one, as nearly swimmer bettered her every best previous time by a goodly margin.
