Minor, DVM Manager of Veterinary Services Norden Laboratories Allied Pavson Terhune once said: The pity of it is that the dog lives for so shod a time. Mr. Terhunes comment reflects the attachment thousands of people feel for their pets. It is an attachment that makes it difficult to talk about the possibility of losing an animal companion. ACCIDENTS ARE responsible for most animal deaths, and a majority of these, accidents occur to pets allowed to roam outside without supervision. Cars or (like pesticides) are just poisons two of the reasons why your dog may not return from an evening walk alone. Because of advances in veterinary medicine, pets that manage to avoid fatal accidents today enjoy increased life expectancies. But this increased life expectancy means more pet owners now must deal with the problem of the aged or chronically ill pet. Medicines and special diets prescribed by your veterinarian can ease the effects of age on your pet. Here are a few other hints to make your aging pets life easier. PRESOFTEN DRY dog food older dogs with milk or broth often have worn or missing teeth. TODAY WE want to tell yon about a teenager whose achievements are so long and so noteworthy that yon just have to begin the story of this Terrific Teenager with a capital T". ' Even though this talented youngster is a lady through and through, she has the nnnsnal name of Michaelle and be sore von pronounce it Mike-e- l and one of her achievements is generally associated exclusively with men. Michaelle to was brought our attention bv a school teacher who wanted us to use her storv in connection with the Adult However Education Program. when we began digging into the story of Michaelle, we found that here was a truly outstanding student and citizen who should be featured in the Terrific Teenager series. MASSACHUSETTS gift to Tooele, Michaelle Breen is the 16 year old daughter of Vincent and Arline Breen and is a Junior in Tooele High School. Her father works for the Federal Government and came to Tooele via Flagstaff, Arizona, where he was transferred to Tooele Army Depot from Navajo A. I), in 1971. Once enrolled in Tooele, Michaelle wasted no time plunging into school, civic and church affairs, and it wasnt long before the talents of this charming youngster were being utilized extensively. She plays the guitar, she is a cheerleader for her Catholic Youth Organization basketball team, shes a member of the Buffalo's great Pep Club, she works on the Tooele Swimming Team organization, Sponsors shes President of the Language Club, and she has been editor of the school paper. A BRILLIANT student, Miss Breen carries a 3.8 scholastic grade, shes a member of the National Honor Society, she is currently an outstanding member of the Advanced Placement Chemistry Program, and her biography will soon be publishho ed in the exclusive Who s Among American Students. That is more than most people accomplish in a full lifetime, and she is just 16 years old. evidence of Michaelle s versatility, and her insatiable desire to do more and master the unusual was her enrollment last fall in the Adult Education welding class. For 12 weeks she attended night school under the direction of Lynn Wyatt, and in that time she mastered the art of arc, bead, button, stringer, T, corner and lap As welds. HOW DID she do? With a broad smile, Mr. Wyatt proudMichaelle was ly proclaimed, one of the best students I ever had. When asked why she had decided to learn welding, Miss Breen said, There was no particular reason, I was just curiShe still hasnt satisfied ous. that curiosity, because now she wants to enroll in an advanced welding class. However, she has no intention of persuing welding as a career. When she graduates from Tooele High School, her plans are to attend Snow College for a couple of years and then enroll at the University of Utah, majoring in medicine. With her talent, her desire to excel, and the capability to scale any goal she establishes, bet that in a its a sure-firefew years she will have progressed from a truly Terrific Teenager, to Doctor Michaelle Breen. d acxg n (5r.'E true Through ADVERTISING IN THE TOOELE TRANSCRIPT-BULLETI- N ( soft. Give your dog regular exercise. Take him for shorter, but more frequent walks. Regular exercise will help prevent constipation and obesity. Try to keep your dog on a regular schedule. A change in diet or meal time may cause him to refuse needed food and vitamins. REMEMBER that hearing and sight are not as acute in the aged animal. Your dog may not always hear your call or whistle, so dont be impatient if he appears disobedient. Use a combination of signals to his attention: wave at the same time you call. Examine your dog regularly for warts and other small growths. The old dog, especially the unspayed female, has a tendency to develop tumors under the skin. The growths are much easier to remove and cause less stress to the animals system if they are located when they are small. Examining your dog for tumors will also serve as a reminder to groom your pet. Frequent brushing helps stimulate the skin and keeps the coat in condition. Despite all your efforts, eventually there will come a time when you know that your pet is in the final stages of life. You may notice that arthritis and joint pain make him reluctant to move from bed except for meals and eliminations. Or he may begin to lose control over his bladder. IN SUCH cases, see your veterinarian for suggestions concerning maintenance treatment. Your veterinarian will also be able to evaluate the amount of discomfort that the old or ill pet is suffering and he can keep you informed about your pets condition. But the final decision to bring about a humane death for the suffering pet must rest with you, the owner. Once you make your decision, dont feel guilty about it. The procedure is quick and pstnke. If you have children at home, take time to explain to them that the animal was in pain and that it was cruel to let him suffer. In any case, remember the happy times that you had with your pet. at-tr- ership. IN A LETTER to the lawmakers, now convened in budget session, Hamilton said the arguments against the purchase proposal which was defeated ill the are 197.3 legislative session, even stronger today.
