Show Brochure Readied On Metric System Guide In anticipation of the U.S. conversion to the metric system, J. J. Keller and Associates, Inc. PRESENT-FUTUR- The tendency to think of the present as a springboard from which to jump into a future assumed to be more enjoyable has been a weakness of American life. One of its consequences has been a tendency to neglect the immediate surroundings and to be concerned with distant goals rather than direct experiences, with process rather than with product, as if today were not worth living. Rene Dubos, A Cod Within (Scribners). has just announced the publication of the Metric System Guide Volume 1. This is the first and only such guide in the United States, and deals with orientation and structure of metrication in this nation. The executive binder edition provides the basic background information necessary for understanding and evaluating the problems involved in metrication for America. The "Metric System Guide - Volume 1" parallels the announcement by such major industries as General Motors, International Harvester and the California School System to go metric. Its planning, research and development have been sev eral years in the making. From introduction to glossary, the first volume contains 15 comprehensive parts designed for specific background in metrology. It is first in a series of volumes on the Metric System; to be used individually or collectively. As a technical publisher for over 20 years, Keller is proud to be the initial publisher to originate this type of Guide; to be continuously maintained current. Another exclusive will be the addition of a monthly updating publication called the "Metric System Guide Bulletin", designed to present up to date metric information. McLure, Grows Up, Educational fully descriptive brochure Coal Technology i nn Help Solve Nation's Energy Xeeds U.S. coal resources can make a major contribution to the Nations future energy needs with further development and application of technologies for solving environmental problems, a report issued by the National Petroleum Council states. Domestic demand for coal is expected to grow at a rate of 11.5 per cent by 1985, according to the report. Only about 10 per cent of the 150 billion tons of recoverable coal will be required by 1985. This 150 billion tons represents less than 5 per cent of the 8.21 trillion tons of coal reserves estimated by the U.S. Geological Survey to exist in the I'nited States. Although underground mining has historically accounted for the largest share of U.S. coal production, 1972 surface mined coal accounted for more than 50 per cent of total production. Surface mining, the report states, is not subject to the health and safety problems associated with deep mining. However, it is subject to increasingly stringent environmental problems. The future ability of the coal industry to supply its overall share of U.S. energy demand will depend on its continued ability to produce coal from deep mines in an efficient and economic manner.
