Burningham, USll Are Horticulturist Baitixt The Independent Church has changed its meeting I I Utah's Most Wanted Insect and Mile Tests Which are Utah's "most wanted" insect and miles? Some which merit the most atlentiim of they are more piesulcnt or most destructive certainly aie not the most commonly liked. Considering these contradictory meanings of popularity in reality contains the list of most ssanted" insret and mite those most unssaiited, points mil Mels in S. Hiiniinghum, I'tah State University Extension horticulturist. Thixigh many iusrcts are vying lor top spot on that list, the alfalfa weevil remains the mnnlier one insect pest of agricul-tui- e in I'tah. This insect ext damages or destroys from $1 million to $5 million worth of alfalfa every year. The Western Cairn mot worm has recently emerged as a major pest of corn in Northern I'tah, hut it still lays liehind the coni mites or red spider miles as the most iiiijMirtant pest of corn e Aphids stale-wid- wire-worm- s Iwt-aus- the corn earworm, and grasv-hopjM'r- s rank next in that order. Black grass hugs have come to the fore as the major ests of I'tah's rangeland grasses in many parts of I'tah. These tiny insects damage tens of thousands of acres of ('tab's most valuable rangeland grasses every year, thus adding to the cost of raising lxt-- f cattle. Grasshoppers rank next as they annually destroy laitli rangeland and grasses and cultivated forage crops. The codling moth still holds its (Misition as the nimilier one (lest of I'tah's fruit crop. I'tah fruit growers siend large sums of money in an effort to control this insect. Without vich control the "worm of the codling moth would infe.t and destroy nearly every apple. Other important (icsts of fruit include mites, the Oriental fruit moth, the pear psylla, the iearh tree Ixirer and aphids. Lite, cattle grihs, face flies, stable flu's, horn flies, house flies, deer flies, horse flies, and sheep keds plague much of our livestock. In many areas lice are the major iests of luff cattle while the flies are the most serious pests of dairy cattle. Judging from the mnnlier of complaints received, the Brown handed and Oriental cockroaches remain at or near the top as the mort popular" household pests in and around the home. However, in many parts of I'tah, Uith urban and rural, they have I een surpassed by the rapidly spreading earwigs. These are replacing flies and mosquitoes as major ests outside the home in many parts of the slate. In many niral I'tah communities flies and mosquitoes still rate as the major nuisance pests, closely by earwigs. The sawtooth grain lieetle and the various dennestid lieetlcs lead the list of major pests of stored food products in the home. They are closely followed by other grain lieetlcs and the flour moths. Insect (rests afflicting shade trees and ornamentals are too numerous to list. Included among some of the more important ones are the ever abundant aphids, the Klin Leaf lieetlcs, l.ilac Inner, Bronze Birch Ik ire r, the webworms, tent caterpillars, lixip-erand oyster shell scale. Colorado potato beetle and Mexican lican The lieetle are leading pests of backyard gardens. Here, earwigs also are proving to lie a real nuisance, especially when they get into well-know- the coni. Tennites also demand a place on that list. Some 23 percent of the homes in the country may have lieen or are now infested with tennites, according to present estimates. This may lie tme in the major population centers along the Wasatch front. These insects do a tremendous amount of damage to buildings of all kinds, including churches. Without effective chemicals to control them, buildings and cities over the country would smin lie ennobling. i Grasshoppers, and alioHt-ltK- ) other in- thrips, clover-mites- , seci and, mite pests could all lie considered worthy contenders for top positions on the list of insect and mite pests which do an estimated $10 million to $15 million worthPof damage every year in Utah. Though the fanner often pays first, everybody eventually shares heavily in paying for this damage, usually bv way of an increase in the cost of food. Helping to compensate for the cost of these culprits are Utah's good guy, really wanted insects such as the honey liees and other insect predators and parasites. They are worth millions to us, Buminghain explained. place to 10 North Mam Street, second fliW. The new location is clearly marked by the black and white sign, "Fraternal Hall.
