Show On Retirement Jobs Offered Q. My son says that I don't ever listen to what he He might be right Irccause sometimes when hes talking, my mind just drifts away to other tilings. What would the Center teach me alxmt this problem? A. You are probably being too harsh with yourself. It is a rare parent who doesnt hear what his child is saying. There are, however, a few things in addition to just plain listening that are taught the volunteers at the Tooele Comity Crisis Center. In listening to someone, become aware of feeling words. They indicate inner feelings of conviction, disturbance, or excitement. The tone in which they are spoken tells much also. Consciously discipline yourself by saying, I am going to listen to what he is saying. Listening is not a natural thing to us humans. We have to condition ourselves to really listen to others. Whenever someone else is speaking, our own internal thinking process is stimulated and we think thoughts to ourselves or think answers to what the person is saying. If what he says is something you dont agree with, dont interrupt or belittle or ridicule. Let him have his say. Better still, why dont you attend the weekly sessions at the Crisis Center? They are very interesting and rewarding as well, in that they teach us how to become latter parents or just more understanding people in general. The instructions are given each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and are held in the Crisis Center (RAPLLN'E) building at the corner of Utah and Broadway. Have a problem? Need someone to rap with? This position is designed to allow each Utah county to adopt, by vote of its residents, the form of government best suited to their countys particular needs, and then take an elevator up to the mezzanine. Supervision lf Utah's population has not uniform throughout the state. In 13 of Utah's 29 counties, the population is nearly the same (within 2, (XX)) as it was in 1890. Six counties have actually experienced a decrease in population in recent years, while seven, or alxiut of the counties, have grown at the same rate or above the fivefold increase experienced by the state as a whole. About half of the state's population now resides in Salt County, which now has nearly half a million people. In contrast, Piute, Wayne, Rich and Daggett each have fewer than 1,500 residents. Daggett, Utah's smallest county, has a population of 657. Proponents of the amendment feel it is wise to offer flexibility in the form of county government. The recommendation of UTEGO (Utahns for Effec- ,ive Government) is that the of uniformity in res(rjt.tions lie removed government a)llnty so that the citizens of each county can be free to select the form of government best suited to their particular needs. Organizations which have endorsed the county government measure include UTEGO (Utahns for Effective Government), the Board of Commissioners of the Utah State Bar, the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Utah Jaycees. IN 1896 it was determined by the Utah legislature that each county would have a commission composed of three commissioners and II other elected officials. Two years later, France and England chose November 11, then known universally as Armistice Day, as the time for placing an Unknown Soldier of that war in each nations highest place of honor. France chose the Arch De Triumph. England selected Westminster bbey. The following year, on soldier whose name was November 11, 1921, an American known only to God was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1926, Armistice Day was made the official name for November 11. Twelve years later, in 1938, another Congressional Resolution made the date a national holiday. IF THE IDEALISTIC hope had been realized that November 11 World War 1 was the war to end all wars, might still lie called Armistice Day. But only two years after the holiday was proclaimed. World War 11 broke out in Europe million Amerif and shattered the dream. Sixteen and cans took part. Four hundred and six thousand died. The families and friends of these dead longed for a way to honor their memory. The resolution introduced by Congressman Rees provided the answer. When President Eisenhower signed the bill proclaiming November 11, Veterans Day, he called for Americans everywhere to rcdedicate themselves to the cause of peace. He proclaimed the day an occasion for honoring veterans of all wars, a group that numbers more than 39 million of whom more than 28.7 million are still alive. Living veterans and their families, plus the living dependents of deceased veterans, made up about one-hathe population of the United States. On June 1, 1954, Congress, acting on a proposal made by Representative Edwin K. Rees, of Kansas, changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. ADDITIONAL significance was added to Veterans Day in 1958, when two more unidentified American war dead were brought to Arlington Cemetery from overseas and interred beside the World War I soldier, one was killed in World War II and the other in Korea.
