As a result of the study, I'tah s State Water Plan, to lie completed tiv 1071, will consider desalting as a potential source of water supply. Mr. Lawrence told the engineers that if the State is to meet its growing water needs in an orderly and systematic way. we must prosome ceed in accordance plan. Making Inis transit more efficient is of major concern to traffic engineers. In Baltimore, for example, an exclusive bus lane was set aside during rush hours. The result: a 17 to 22 per tent sjHedup for buses . , . with other traffic moving 39 per tent faster as well. TASTY-TENDE- Medical Centers Must Care Provide First-Rat-e The University of Utah Medical Center is in an ideal position to "lead the nation" in setting up programs that will meet the critical health needs of the people, the new dean of the College of Medicine said recently during a visit to the campus. Dr. Franklin C. Eliaugh, Jr., presently dean of the Boston University School of Medicine, is visiting the campus periodically, preparing to assume the Utah position July 1. ONE OF T11E reasons I am coining to Utah is that I see enormous potential and opportunity at the Medical Center and throughout the region. This is evidenced by the success of the Intermountain Regional Medical Program, the only one in the nation that is in full operation, Dr. Eliaugh said. dean added The that the strong base at Utah and other resources available should make it easy for the Medical Center to move its programs out into the communities and rural areas to fill the health care needs of all the people. ' In terms of resources, the culture, the brain power, the excitement, I think theres every bit as much to offer here as in the East, he said. ACCORDING TO Dr. Ebaugh medical centers across the nation have a unique responsibility in health care seeing that first-rat- e .is delivered to all segments of Students are particu- society. Jarly anxious to help in pilot like setting up clinics projects to take health care to the people. One solution to Utahs health problems, Dr. Ebaugh suggested, might le the establishment of in both small health teams, urban ghettos and rural communities, many of which now have no doctors or health facilities of any kind. These teams could include medical students, . nurse practitioners, and others in the local communities involved in health care, perhaps even town . daiggists. There's no reason why the cant lie a part of the health team, Dr. Eliaugh said. He could do urinalyses, simple blood tests, measure hemoglobin, and supervise patients on drug therapy, alerting the doctor when there are adverse side effects or when the drug may not be work- a tasty-tende- LEAN SWISS STEAK BEEF SHORT RIBS druggist 'SHRIMP ing. THE HEALTH TEAM concept, said Dr. Ebaugh, would require new legislation, bringing the College of Law and state representatives into the health picture. New laws would permit team nurses and pharmacists to have certain legally defined authority and responsibilities. One highly trained doctor, for example, with the proper social workers, health team nurses, pharmacists and others could perhaps lie taking care of a larger population, doing a better job, getting more satisfaction out of it intellectually and meeting the needs of the patients in the process, Dr. Ebaugh said. The new dean believes that the present concept of indigent or welfare patient care is outmoded and will soon be a thing of the past. He looks to the day when there will lie one standard of medical care for all patients because everyone will be covered by health insurance. I can see the day coming when were going to have a national health insurance scheme, with the now indigent Fedpatients subsidized by the eral tax dollar, he said.
