Show The Tooele Transcript, Fri., November 8, 1968 Univ. of Utah to Study Radioactivity in Utah The U S. Public Health Service ha awarded a three-yea$175,000 grant to the Uni vethe rity of Utah to investigate rate at which radioactive fallout may be moving from Utah high mountain into ft ream and and then onto irrigated r, farm. National THE AGENCY'S Center for Radiological Health made the award thi week to Dr. Rolwrt C. Pendleton, associ-at- e professor of biological science and director of the University' Departmentof Radiological Health. e and Dr. Charles W. May, anatof research professor omy and assistant research professor of radiology. For the last seven years. Dr. Pendleton and Dr. Mays, with a (earn of University scientists and ingraduate students, have been of atomic effects vestigating the fallout on Utah, particularly the accumulation of radioactive isoin topes in the high mountains, wildlife, and in the state s milk asso-ciat- " supplies. Dr. Pendleton says findings indicate a gradual buildup of radioactivity in the high mountain country since the University studies began in 1962. The mountains, he adds, are more suslow-e- r ceptible to fallout than the winds rains, lecause valleys and other meteorological conditions surrounding the higher elevations precipitate more nuclear showers from radioactive clouds on passing overhead. Readings mountains the in high samples range up to 40 times higher than those from lower elevations, Dr. Tooele City League Bowling ' Teams: W ' 24 9 234 234 94 Bateman Jewelry ' Beneficial Homes - Tuxedo Junction Bevan Drug Steamway Carpet Allertsons Team No. 7 22 20 20 , I S & R v Eagles No. 1 Moose No. 1 E&J Tree Svc Eagles No. 2 Moose No. 2 Cherry's S ; 11 18 18 16 16 15 17 17 154 174 13 20 ... 84 244 6 5 27 28 High individual 3 games: B. If these isotopes could remain in mountain soils -at least under present test bans they and nuclear controls would decay over the years. But Dr. Pendleton and other Univernumersity scientists have found created by eroous "hot spots sion on unvegetated, watersheds. "The radioactive isotopes are rewashing down into streams, ditches. and servoirs irrigation Dr. Fendleton says. "They are accumulating on certain poorly drained farms. Studies during the next three the rate years will concentrate on of movement of two long-livestronium 90 and cesiisotopes from the mountain um 137 watersheds to Utah croplands. Regular expeditions are planned into Utah primitive areas, includNortheasing the High Uintas in tern Utah, the Tushar Mountains in Beaver and Piute Counties and Boulder Mountain in Wayne Countv. THE RESEARCH .will also center around "hot spot dairy farms which have the highest levels of radioactive nuclides in milk, soil and vegetation. Dr. Pendleton says teams of scien- -' lists will cooperate with Utah farmers in collecting samples to be assayed in the Universitys radiobiology laboratory in Salt Lake City. The resulting data will be fed into the schools computer system for analysis. Dr. Pendleton is confident the research will lead to development of farm practices that will lower the quantities of strontium 90 and cesium 137 entering Utahs milk supplies. The University scientist said there is no reason for undue concern at the present time over fallout levels since milk and other foods produced in Utah -except those in the high mounare generally less contains taminated with radioactive materials than foods in other states. This is because Utah for the most part is a dry state, with fallout collecting in higher elevations. C - over-graze- d d - - IKP Tigers are the only cats that luntarily seek the water. Tuesday A.M.
