Rampton , has declared this week, Octoler 20-2- 6 CLEANER AIR WEEK. During CLEANER AIR WEEK Utah joins the rest of the nation ' in an appraisal of air pollution viprohlems and progress. Of the ap- proximately one hundred and million tons of air , .thirty-thre- e .pollutants released in the air ,,each year in the United States, ;4he majority, sixty-fou- r per cent, .. come from automobiles, trucks and I buses. Another seventeen per cent ..come from the manufacturing industries. The balance is from elec- ;,,tric power generating plants, 4, .from the heating of homes, apart-ment houses and office buildings, ..and from the burning of trash and garbage. STATE AND local governing agencies, as well as private organizations, have given increased attention to the nature of air .pollution factors since the 1967 legislation for air conservation. In Utah the effort to control .air pollution has been aided by ,i U.S. Public Health Service grants; it is expected that these grants will be continued. In September 1967 the Utah State Board of Health endorsed .the action of the states new Air . Conservation Committee which urged that all open burning be prohibited at sites used as disposal areas. This is to be accomplished ..through ordinances adopted by cities, towns, and counties. v. RECENTLY THE Air Conservation Committee prepared a ; proposal on regulation of open . burning. This proposal has been ,' discussed in seven public hearings , throughout the state; the proposed regulation will be reviewed in light of comments made at those hearings prior to adoption by the 'Committee. i ; Grant Winn, Ph.D., Executive Secretary of the Air Conservation .Committee, has made a special Request to each citizen of the v9tate. Dr. Winn suggests that individuals can help to improve air .quality by refraining from burn- ring weeds, trash and garbage, and leaves. This can appreciably prevent particulate air pollution, Dr. Winn said, especially with temperature inversions beginning fti the valleys. Tons of leaves will be converted into airborne chemicals and smoke particles if burning is continued, he said. -- ifeiqftjP) jj) Still Time to Join Mormon Youth Symphony & Chorus , TL RED-RIP- E |
