It is amazing how quickly talk can turn from industri- al development to isolationism in Itah. I The Salt Lake Area Chandler of Commerce, like most chamliers of commerce throughout the nation, is usually busily engaged in activities designed to inveigle new indtis-- l try into the state. But Tuesday saw the Chamlier make a sudden and startling aliout face, which, in effect, invited a $52 million plant to go elsewhere. As reNirted on page one of this paper. Magnesium Projects, which is planning a plant near Timpc, requested the Chamlier of Commerce to support the application of Baft River Rural Electric Cooperative, now pending the Public Service Commission, to bring electric power to the area under consideration by Magnesium Projects as a plant site. Magnesium Projects has reeatedly stated that the availability of low cost power is the paramount consideration upon which the, choice of a location hinges. The Chamlier adopted a resolution stating that it would not lie in the public interest for taxpayers to contribute to such a sulisidy (Raft River is an agent of a federally supported power authority). This decision came after two separate sessions during which the Chandler of Commerce Board of Governors heard Corporation, a prime tiacker presentations from both II-of Magnesium Projects, and Utah Power and Light Company which is the chief opponent of the Raft River application. It is unfortunate that the Chamlier has seen fit to place the executives of a company which promises to hire 1000 men over a two year construction period, and 350 permanent employees, in such an awkward position. Magnesium Projects, is now, in effect, liegging the state of Utah to accept their $52 million plant. Plant representatives have stated that it would not lie all THAT inconvenient for them to locate their facility in northern Idaho, which, after Tuesdays blast by the Chamlier we could not really blame them for doing. But such a relocation would be to the detriment of the entire state of Utah, but particularly to Tooele County. In-for-e Tooele Is Utah While the. Salt Lake Area Chamlier of Commerce is in out roasting pan, may we remind them that, so far as we know, Tooele Comity is still included in the State of Utah. "The Chamlier has been expressing considerable concern that the state may lose Deseret Test Center, currently located at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake. In all probability, the test center will lie relocated at Dugway Proving Ground in Tooele County, after the closure of the Fort. In spite of the actions of the Chamlier the last few days, Tooele has not seceded from the State, though we are beginning to realize that with a surfeit of friends, we are well fitted with enemies. . big-cit- y B. Second Semester Begins at Westminster Continued from Page One Second semester orientation and registration is scheduled Monday through Wednesday at Westminster College, Dr. Robert M. Stewart, dean, announced today. Mondays schedule includes orientation and placement testing for new students in the administration building and advising for returning students will be handled in faculty offices. Tuesday will be devoted to advising returning students in the library, and registration is scheduled Wednesday from 8:30 a. in. to 4 p.in. in the gymnasium. Dr. Stewart said. Given Certificate Lab Teaches Conservation Came and the Soil Conservation Office would both be willing to help lay out and stock such a nature lab. SUGGESTED Conservation Experience Sites for the nature lab include river bottom area with cattle, cottontail rabbits, fieldmice and ducks, marshes with muskrats and tadpoles; frogs, a mountain stream with trout, weasels and water snakes, and a conifer area with grouse, squirrels and chipmunks. Among the topics which could be more adequately studied with the aid of this lab are water evaporation and transpiration, nature balance, entomology, watershed, plant identification, water pollution and wilderness preservation as well as special study of each type of animal and fish represented in the lab. Mr. Sanderson said that the idea grew out of a Soil Conservation seminar the two teachers attended recently, as well as the success they had with a summer science program held for 33 students.
