But the three independents are getting harder and harder to pick. Utah State certainly must be considered. Oregon State is another possibility, Seattle a third. If we were to pick now, these would be the three. But the Big Sky Conference ' is going to be considered independent this year and Montana State, right now the leagues leader, is in a position for consideration. The Big Sky league cannot be automatically qualified with its winner since all teams are not yet recognized by the NCAA. Weber has asked for recognition but it has not yet been given. Seattle and Oregon State tangle soon in Seattle. Seattle also visits Logan to meet Utah State in the near future, February 20 to be exact. It would be a shame considering the tournament is on their home court and all, but Oregon State stands a chance of not making the regional playoffs with the kind of teams like Utah State and Seattle. We would pick Seattle and Oregon State to meet in a playoff and Utah State to clash with the WAC king-pin- . Seattle has lost only two games this year . . . both to WAC teams, Brigham Young and Arizona. Oregon State has defeated BYU In a hard fought contest and Utah State has handled all the WAC teams it can get its hands on. USU is, in our humble estimation. the strongest of the area representatives at the present time, but they too must do a little more traveling in the future. The question often arises when sports reporters get together as to the toughest basketball conference in the country. Everyone naturally votes for their home league. We think the WAC should match anything around for thrills this year. But its like the old contest at Notre Dame when the team used to vote which was most important, the linemen or the backs. Funny how the vote always turned out 7 to 4 for the line. But there is another pretty rugged basketball conference around this year . . . the Missouri Valley League which includes Wichita, Cincinnati and Bradley, all ranked in the top 20 of the nations teams. The schools involved admit that basketball is strong because the conference does not have outstanding football teams, and therefore seek prestige through the roundball game. So dont, forget the Missouri Valley race when you get into a conference. Still think the WAC is pretty tough, though, and wed like to get these other teams oh our home floors to prove our point.
