Roberts The Tooele baseball team warmed up for their n battle with Granger this Friday, when they hammered out an 3 win over the Cyprus Pirates last Tuesday at Magna. TRAILING FOR THE first two innings the Buffs exploded for four big runs in the third, to take a 3 lead, and then added insurance runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to make the win a comparatively easy one. Doug Wolter started on the hill for Tooele, but the undefeated wasnt as sharp as he has been probably the long lay-otook some of the edge off his pitching mastery. Wolter got the first two Pirate batters, then Goodsell cracked out a single, three consecutive walks produced the first Cyprus run, and then Powell singled for the second run. Wolter struck out Taylor with the bases still loaded to end the inning. Tooele scored once in the top of the second when Phil RusselJ walked Donnie Hullinger, singled and Jerry Nash drove Russell home with a clean bingle between third and short. in the bottom half of the Cyprus moved the score out to inning when Rushton singled, an error and Goidsells second hit scored Rushton with the final Cyprus tally. THE BUFFS ERUPTED in the top of the third, when Wolter blasted a single into right field, Dennis Smith was hit with a pitched ball, and catcher Phil Russell smashed out a long double scoring Wolter and Smith. Hullinger walked, David Smith was safe on an error and they both scored on another error. That gave Tooele a 3 lead. Gerald McPhie took over the pitching chores in the bottom of the fourth inning, and turned in a very fine performance to allowed the nod as the winning pitcher. McPhie gain only two hits, and struck out five, during his sting on the mound. Wolter gave up four hits and struck out 5, while giving up four walks. Defensive gems were turned in by Tooele right fielder Jerry Nash who ran a country mile to snare Headrick's smash that looked like a sure hit, and center fielder Jimmy Leonelli, robbed Rushton of a sure double when he gobbled in Rushtons fast sinking blast in the third inning. COACH DEAN STRINGHAM used 10 players, and all but two of them collected hits in Tooeles 13 hit outburst. Leonelli had three for five, while Wolter, Alon Lewis and Ken Colledge each had two. Extra base knocks were Russell and Wolters two baggers. The win was the fifth in a row for the rampaging Buffs, and they will play Granger this Friday at Granger. If Tooele can win this one, they will earn the Region Four Championthe first in Tooeles history. And the winner of Region ship Four will play the Region Three (Salt Lake City) winner on Region Fours home diamond. So if the Buffs can nail down the Region championship by defeating Granger this Friday, s they will move into the Class A against the Region Three champion (probably Granite) and they'll play the semis on the Tooele ball field. show-dow- Tooele Elks, look on.
