Four classes of licenses are granted, based on the applicants ability to pass various written tests and to send and receive code. THE NOVICE License requires that the operator pass a test on FCC regulations and send five words per minute. It is good for one year and is not renewable. A Technician License is granted to those capable of sending five words per minute and passing an examination on theory. General Licenses require the ability to send 13 words per minute and pass a written examination on electronic theory and FCC regulations. It must be renewed every five years. There is also a license for Amateur Extra Class.
